A Final Push: Jesuit Varsity Basketball Playoffs

-

Varsity Basketball had a somewhat short Postseason, ultimately being eliminated in the second round of play. However, despite being two starters-down due to injury, the Rangers still managed to play two very impressive games.

In the first round, the Rangers matched up against Arlington Bowie. Last year, the Varsity squad lost to Bowie in the Playoffs, so they were out for revenge this year. Jesuit started off hot, ending the first half up 34-22. This fiery aggression only continued, as they continued to outscore Bowie to achieve a commanding 71-49 victory to secure a spot in the second round of the Playoffs. Pierce Popelka ’26 captained this first round victory, putting up 20 points and six rebounds. Additionally, Cooper Jensen ’26 caught fire from behind the arch, knocking down three three-pointers. Nick Pregler ’26 also put up a season high of 14 points, leading the Rangers to victory. Senior leadership was key to this win, as Jesuit’s most experienced players took charge and control of the game.

In the second round, Jesuit faced up against the second best team in Texas: the Little Elm Lobos. The game started off close, and Jesuit ended up down only 10 at half. However, the Rangers could not keep up with the Lobos, and the season came to an end with a loss in the second round. Despite the loss, a few players managed to shine. Jesuit was led by Pierce Popelka with 12 points, and Nick Pregler with 13 points, continuing his hot streak, and ending the season on a high note.

Despite the untimely end to their run, the Rangers had a very impressive, entertaining, and successful season overall. Ultimately, Jesuit Varsity Basketball ended with an 18-14 record. In the words of one of the Varsity players:

“The Postseason didn’t go as we planned, but overall, I’m super proud of our guys and the way we competed.” –Jack Sisk ’27
