Swimming and Diving: Ready to Make Waves

Following a successful 2024-25 season that saw Jesuit swimming and diving achieve first place at both the District and Regional levels, the team is poised for another impressive year.

Last year, at the District 7-6A Championships, Jesuit had several podium finishers in every event. Additionally, Drew Shippey ’27 was awarded Runner-up District MVP, and right behind him, Sebastian Suwanda ’26 and Sam Kennington ’26 were awarded 3rd Place District MVP. One week later, Jesuit won the Regional 2-6A Championships, with podium finishes by Jonah Ruhl ’27, Sam Kennington, Luke Lary ’26, Drew Shippey, Sebastian Suwanda, and Jackson Addison-Jordan ’26. Two weeks later, the same six Rangers who podiumed at Regionals headed off to the UIL 6A State Championships in Austin, with Jonah Ruhl finaling in both of his individual events along with the 200 Free Relay squad of Sam Kennington, Luke Lary, Jonah Ruhl, and Jackson Addison-Jordan. On the diving side, Koby Broad ’28 and Kobus Brewton ’28 were both able to make it to the Regional competition for the 1M Diving, where Broad placed sixth and Brewton placed tenth.

Opening Team and Parent Meeting

The 2025-26 season commenced with the customary parent and team meeting on August 18 in the Gull, where Head Coach Doug Moyse welcomed all parents and swimmers and outlined his vision for the upcoming year. He noted the strength and promise of the talent he sees coming with this year’s team, predicting even bigger success from the previous season. He expressed his commitment to fostering dedication and a competitive spirit to all swimmers. He stated that his end-goal was to turn potential into high performance, focusing on those who show drive and consistency, re-emphasizing that those who show up will find success. In closing, he gave a positive highlight to the importance of diving at Jesuit and encouraged aspiring divers to meet with Coach Sierra Thain to learn more on how to join the team.

In a mic pass to Assistant Coach Michael Meagher, there was more reiteration of excitement for the season and the talent that coming from this year’s team. He emphasized the essentials for success in swimming at Jesuit and stressed the importance of punctuality, positive body language, coachability, preparedness, and enthusiasm, underscoring that raw talent is not the only driver. Additionally, Athletic Director Kyle Herrema welcomed new families, congratulated the team on their remarkable 2024-25 season, and conveyed his anticipation for continued achievements with the current roster.

To conclude the meeting, the six senior captains for the 2025-26 season were introduced: Jackson Addison-JordanSam KenningtonLuke LarySebastian SuwandaJonah Tavares, and George Weaver. Lead Captain and Team Chaplain Sebastian Suwanda spoke to the incoming underclassmen swimmers, generating enthusiasm for the upcoming season and extending support and guidance in strength and training on behalf of all of the senior captains and other supportive upperclassmen. Closing out the meeting, Suwanda led the team in THE YELL, marking an energetic start to the season.

Looking Ahead

This year’s swim season will begin with the traditional team practice meet against Bishop Lynch at the Gull on September 11. Subsequently, the Rangers will face several 6A competitors at the highly anticipated Ranger Relays, hosted at SMU’s natatorium on September 27. Recognized for its distinctiveness compared to most other meets, this event consistently attracts large crowds and generates a roaring atmosphere for both athletes and spectators; definitely an event not to be missed.

Midway through the season, the Rangers are scheduled to compete against Preston Hollow rival St. Mark’s, which is bound to be a close one. Closing the year for Thanksgiving Break, Jesuit will send qualifying Rangers to the annual North Zone TISCA meet, an event formatted in both preliminary and final rounds.

The Rangers will open the 2026 year with the Jesuit Invitational quad-meet that will feature rivals Plano Senior High, St. Stephen’s, and Houston’s Strake Jesuit. After this meet, the postseason will be kicked off with the District 7-6A JV Championships, and for the Varsity squad, the District, Regional, and State Championships.
