A Legacy of Excellence: Jesuit Swimming and Diving Wraps Season at UIL 6-A State Championships

Jesuit Swimming and Diving recently competed at the UIL 6A State Championships, held Febuary 21st-22nd at the University of Texas. The Rangers finished 33rd of 62 teams, punctuating what was one of the best Jesuit seasons in history. Jesuit will return the entirety of the state team next year, when it will look to build upon the success they had this year.

Recap of Events

200 IM– Jonah Ruhl was the first swimmer up for the Rangers. In the preliminaries he swam a 1:51.52 qualify 11th for finals. In the finals he finished 13th, swimming a time of 1:52.15. He would tie with Alex Thomas from Houston Memorial.

50 Freestyle– Sam Kennington was the Ranger’s qualifier in this event following a second-place finish at regionals. He touched the wall in the prelims with a personal best of 21.16. He finished 18th, becoming the second-alternate going into finals.

100 Butterfly– The qualifier for the Rangers in this event was junior Luke Lary. Lary finished 18th in the prelims with a time of 50.19. He was just off his best of 50.09. 

100 Freestyle– Ruhl was up again the 100 Free. Ruhl finished 16th in the prelims, just making the finals with a time of 46.48. In the finals, he remained 16th, finishing with a time of 46.63.

200 Free Relay– This was one of two Jesuit relays to make it to state. Jesuit qualified for the finals in 16th place with a time of 1:26.16. In finals, the team of Jonah Ruhl, Luke Lary, Jackson Addison-Jordan, and Sam Kennington moved up five places to finish eleventh, touching the wall at a time of 1:25.00.

400 Freestyle Relay– The second of Jesuit’s two relays, the Rangers placed 17th, just missing out on a final qualification. The team of Kennington, Lary, Sebastian Suwanda, and Ruhl swam a 3:09.13, just two seconds off their regional-winning time of 3:07.88.

Sebastian has been working for the Roundup since the beginning of his freshmen year. Within Jesuit, he is involved with the Admissions Ambassadors, Campus Ministry, and Religious Rangers. He also serves as the Outreach Coordinator for Rangers for Life and the Student Chaplain for Jesuit Swimming and Diving. Outside of Jesuit, he is involved at church and does club swimming at Dallas Mustangs Swim Team. His two favorite Netflix shows are Suits and Designated Survivor.
