Inside the Scrum: Jesuit Rugby Remains Undefeated

-

Coming off a 3-0 start, the Rangers were starting hot. The Jesuit Rangers, led by Captain Mitch Sullivan ’24 and Dylan Wachsman ’24, seemed to have nothing in their way. They would face no trouble in the back half of their regular season.

After a 74-0 blowout against St. Pius, the Rangers faced the Allen Eagles at an away game. Bringing up many new players, the rangers looked to develop their new talent. Jesuit dominated the competition, allowing a single try at the end of the game.

“We played extremely well; I am very proud of our backs and how we moved the ball.” -Mitch Sullivan ’24

The rangers finished the game with a score of 89-7.

Team Chat Pre-Game

Strake Jesuit

One of the most important games of the Season, Jesuit vs… Jesuit! These two teams met in the championship last year with the Rangers winning on the Crusaders’ home turf. Both teams had energy and it was extremely tense.

“Remember the game last year, remember how it felt to beat them!” -Coach Matt Upton

Jake Sullivan ’24 had a hat trick to lead the Rangers against the Crusaders. Chase Brown ’24, Jacob Lehman ’24 and Sullivan all found the back of the try zone. Helping the lead, Senior Captain Wachsman went 7/7 for conversions.

Alex Andujar ’25 Kicking for Points

Lake Travis

After multiple rain delays, the Rangers faced off on the freezing cold and wet turf of the Ranger’s Stadium against the Lake Travis Cavaliers. Lake Travis is historically known to be a difficult game, a team that always puts up a physical fight in both tackling and scrums.

“We have to play simple rugby, just make the other guy use all their force to get you to the ground!” -Coach Matt Upton

The Rangers struck first with Alex Andujar ’25 scoring first for a 5-0 lead. Sullivan and Amiree Thomas ’24 found the back of the try zone to lead the rangers to a 17-12 win over the Cavaliers. This game clinched the North Division for the Rangers to become the champions of the North Division Title.

“It was a sloppy game but we got the win, that’s what matters.” -Chase Brown ’24

Coming off a close victory, the Rangers were looking for a bounce back. Finding themselves in what felt like a hurricane, the Rangers battled the Blue Jays in New Orleans for the rivalry matchup. Unlike other Jesuit vs. Jesuit battles, the two schools have a friendly attitude and always enjoy a nice meal afterwards.

Brown, Luke Lamont ’24, Lehman, Wachsman, and Sullivan scored to give the Rangers a 33-0 victory. Wachsman would be 4/5 for conversions.

“It was wet, kind of miserable, but rain is good for the rocks and good for Jesuit Dallas Rugby.” -Dylan Wachsman ’24

Lineout vs. FFA

Faith Family Academy & Plano

To say the Rangers took care of business is an understatement. FFA was the Ranger’s senior night and the full Class of 2024 roster put on a show, leaving the scoreboard 74-7.

“What is there to say, we showed up and took care of business!” -Daniel Lucido ’24

Similarly, during the last home battle against the Plano Panthers, Jesuit steamrolled their competition with tries from Ben Petroff ’24 and Lamont aiding in their 40-0 victory. With such a high power offense it seems like no one can stop the ranger’s scoring ability.

The Rangers have outscored their opponents 302-43. The Rangers will be back in action this Friday against the Lake Travis Cavaliers for the Semi-Final Playoff Game.
