iPhone 15: Is it Worth it?

-

Is it truly worth spending another $900 on a phone, or are the differences unnoticeable from the iPhone 14? Today I’m going to go through 3 reasons why or why not to buy the new iPhone 15.

Structure and Frame

While the iPhone 15 and 14 look similar to the naked eye, there are some significant differences between the two. While both are still about the same length of 6.1 Inches, the iPhone 15 offers a weight reduction of about 20 grams compared to the 14. This is partially because of the frame change from stainless steel to titanium. Another reason for this change in weight is because apple managed to decrease the width and length by a couple millimeters, while slightly increasing it’s thickness. If you are a fanatic about the weight of your phone, even when it comes down to 20 grams, the iPhone 15 may be something to consider. However, studies on titanium compared to stainless steel typically show titanium being more prone to damage and cracking. So, if you are willing to trade the risk of cracking your frame for a lighter phone, once again, the iPhone 15 may be something to consider.

New Innovations

The iPhone 15 consists of many new features which are not included in the iPhone 14. If the following changes are of $900 significance to you, then you should consider buying the iPhone 15. First, the power button now has expanded functionality. One can now use the power button to activate the flashlight, recording a voice reminder, triggering shortcuts, opening the camera, or switching to “concentration” mode. However, while there are multiple actions to choose from, you are limited to selecting just one action for the button. This makes the feature seem somewhat restrictive and outdated. Certain android devices like the Google Pixel 7A offer greater customization, making actions available through the volume buttons and even sometimes the back of the phone.

Updated Performance

The performance upgrades is what stands out as the biggest difference between the iPhone 14 and 15. First, the previous A16 processor has been replaced by the brand new A17 processing chip. The biggest difference between the two being that the A17 contains a six-core GPU while the A16 contains a five-core GPU. This processing chip is largely responsible for apple’s claims that the iPhone 15 is “going to be the best gaming console.” This chip won’t only be beneficial for video games, it will also be responsible for delivering an overall more nimble and swifter experience. And of course, a new iPhone can’t be better without an updated camera, again. However, the major difference isn’t in the camera quality itself, rather in the photo quality from the eye. The screen quality is extremely clear and pure, creating for a higher pixelated depiction of photos.

Lastly, one of the most controversial changes of this iPhone, the new charging cord. Apple decided to switch from the lightning connector to the USB-C. Many people think this is a great idea, as now you can easily share battery percentage between iPhones and computers. Since apple had already switched to the charging form of USB-C in their computers, this alteration if anything is a positive change.

People may value the changes differently, but it is irrefutable that Apple has once again made a significantly improved product.
