Top Gun: Maverick Revisited

The 95th Academy Awards just aired on screens all around the world. Despite not garnering many awards, Top Gun: Maverick continues to make a mark on Hollywood history.

Even though the film was nominated for several awards, it won only a select few. However, the film is still praised and renowned for its accomplishments.

Flashing back to 2022, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the 1986 film hit theaters in May. High hopes were held for Top Gun: Maverick as a follow-up to the beloved classic. Many people doubted that the film would be able to live up to the legend of the original. When in reality, it surpassed it.

Modern blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick stand apart in comparison to the many superhero movies that presently rule the box office.

Yet, both loyal supporters of the original and newcomers have praised the film, highlighting its breathtaking effects, exhilarating music, and captivating storyline as standout qualities. Nevertheless, the question remains: what makes this movie so significant?

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Firstly, Top Gun: Maverick delivers on the action front. Filled with awe-inspiring aerial shots and pulse-pounding action sequences, the movie keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Secondly, the story of Top Gun: Maverick stands out as it offers a fresh take on the story and does not rely on drumming up nostalgia and enthusiasm from the first movie. The movie explores new concepts, presenting a welcome diversion from the usual formulaic and predictable stories found in today’s blockbusters.

Furthermore, the use of practical effects in Top Gun: Maverick distinguishes it from many other contemporary films. The movie has breathtaking flight sequences that mostly made use of physical effects rather than just CGI. Real military instructors trained numerous cast members to fly these military jets by real military instructors. This gives the film a sense of sincerity and authenticity that is sometimes lacking in modern films.

Top Gun: Maverick’s effect goes beyond just providing an entertaining movie experience. The movie is important for the whole industry as it represents a return to conventional narrative and production methods in a media world full of excess.

Recorded commending him for his work on the film during the Academy Luncheon, Steven Spielberg, one of Cruise’s long-time collaborators, commended him for his work on the film, saying:

“You saved Hollywood’s ass. And, you might have saved theatrical distribution. Seriously. Maverick might have saved the entire theatrical industry.”

Spielberg’s comments further stress how impactful Cruise’s film truly seems to be.

Recently, the film industry has become congested, making it challenging for films to stand out and draw viewers. The competition has only increased since streaming services emerged. Focusing on character growth and an emotion, Top Gun: Maverick serves as a reminder that traditional forms of filmmaking are still relevant today.

Conversely, a lot of modern superhero films usually prioritize spectacle and sequels above storytelling. They may be entertaining, but they typically lack emotional impact and depth. Top Gun: Maverick emphasizes the people, the humanity, and their difficulties rather than just the grand spectacles.

Top Gun: Maverick stands out by emphasizing character development and emotional narrative. It’s a film that doesn’t mind slowing down and spending more time with its characters.
