Frisco West

On Thursday, February 9, 2023, Jesuit Dallas Varsity Gold Hockey had a disappointing, yet hard-fought loss against Frisco West. After being down two goals early in the second period, the Rangers battled back to tie the game 3-3 at the end of the second period, with goals from Ryan Virkar ’23, Kyle Hogan ’23, and Allen Zhang ’26. Hardworking players Wade Bryan ’26, John Bowdich ’24, and William Sahadevan ’23 also picked up some assists in the second period.

Overall, penalties seemed to be a major problem for the Rangers, and Jesuit’s six two-minute penalties, three of these in the third period, led to some chances for Frisco West to score goals at the end of the game. Frisco West would end up beating Jesuit Dallas’ gold team 7-4, scoring four goals in the third period. One positive for the Rangers in the final period was a shocking, coast-to-coast goal that Allen Zhang ’26 scored towards the end of the game, as he sped around the defenders and put the puck in the top-right corner of the net. Following the game, the Rangers would learn from the loss and start their next game, against McKinney, with some fire.

McKinney

On Thursday, February 16, 2023, Jesuit Dallas Varsity Gold Hockey dismantled McKinney to finish up their 2022-23 season. Senior captain Kyle Hogan ’23 started off the game with a goal in the first period, while Jayson Hess ’23 made 23 saves for the Rangers. Chris Sweda ’23, Noah Pinkall ’24, William Sahadevan ’23, Allen Zhang ’26, and Liam Placke ’24 worked hard for the win, each collecting 1-2 assists. Wade Bryan ’26, and William Hubbell ’26 showed out, each scoring twice.

Jayson Hess ’23, who stepped in as goalie for the Rangers this year, played an amazing game on Thursday, earning a completely clean sheet. He secured his first shutout of the year, taking shots from all over the ice, and kicking McKinney out of its playoff spot.

“[It was] great to end the season with a win and carry some momentum into nationals.” – Jayson Hess ’23

The Rangers, who, after securing their fifth straight Texas Amateur Hockey Association (TAHA) Division I Pure State Championship in January, will plan for the 2023 USA Hockey High School National Tournament, which goes from March 23-27 in Plymouth, Minnesota.
