Winter Storm Uri: A Teacher’s Perspective

-

On February 15-19, as students across Texas had classes canceled, residents in DFW saw 3-5 inches of snow across the week. Teachers had to quickly shift lesson plans and prepare for the storm. I recently had the opportunity to interview freshman guidance counselors Mr. Marr and Mr. Murphy about his storm preparations and story.

Interview – Mr. Marr

Are there any specific preparations you took to protect your home?

Mr. Marr-  “I wrapped the exterior pipes around my home with towels, left the faucets dripping, and did our best to keep the door closed.”

Did you lose any power during the rolling blackouts?

Mr. Marr- “We did not lose any power. We were lucky enough to live close to a water treatment facility.”

How did you spend your time during the storm?

Mr. Marr- “We did our best to keep the power off for our fellow Texans. I spent my time starting a new book, Waylon Jennings Auto-Biography, on his life as a country musician. My wife and I went on a 5-mile walk on Monday when it was just powder on the ground before the major freeze.”

Thank You for your time, Mr. Marr

Interview – Mr. Murphy

Are there any specific preparations you took to protect your home?

Mr. Murphy- “I am a first-time homeowner so there was a lot of googling. I wrapped the exterior pipes in towels, left the faucets running, and got vent covers.”

Did you lose any power during the rolling blackouts?

Mr. Murphy- “We lost power from Sunday to Tuesday and had about one hour on per day. As the days went on throughout the week the power situation got better.”

How did you spend your time during the storm?

Mr. Murphy- “During the day, My wife and I took care of our baby. At night we all slept by the fireplace to stay warm.

Thank You for your time, Mr. Murphy
