The Monumental 600th Win

-

While most historians would argue that there are no living dinosaurs, they have failed to recognize the one living at Jesuit College Prep School that goes by the name Charlie Delong. Seemingly ageless, coach DeLong, a staple of Jesuit’s sports program, celebrated a monumental moment with his team after their win over Plano Senior High School.

With the win, DeLong joined an elite club of coaches, as he became the third coach in Texas history to reach 600 wins. Not only that, Coach is also the winningest active coach in UIL 6A, highlighting his dominance in the sport of Soccer and commitment to Jesuit. Furthermore, he has won 87 percent of the games he has coached and is a 17-time state champion at Jesuit. Twice he has earned Texas Coach of the Year honors and is also a four-time Dallas Metroplex Coach of the Year.

Coach DeLong and his team secured the 600th win through a hard-fought game, as senior Diego Sierra assisted on an empty net goal that junior Ryan Shea scored on. While Jesuit didn’t have many shots on goal during the game, they converted when they needed to and played stout defense, led by their studs in the goal. Seniors Geoff Miller, playing in the first half, and Tom Jubin, playing in the second, combined to make multiple saves and ensure the shutout. Miller said he was “proud to help coach DeLong secure his 600th win. He deserves that more than anyone else in the world and for this team to be able to help him accomplish that means just as much to us as it does for him.”

As a result, Jesuit was able to come away with a solid team win, and the Jesuit community was able to revere Coach. He was even featured in the Dallas Morning News, which further augments his fame and achievements while at Jesuit. Senior Stratton Ross said “Coach DeLong is loved by every player on the team, and they are always appreciative of him. Coach provides the guidance and wisdom that are needed for our team to be successful, and I can’t imagine this soccer program without his guidance.”
