On January 3rd, the Jesuit varsity basketball team tipped off district and have shown promise and found success as they have battled some of the state’s top teams and are looking to end the season on a high note as they go into the week of the season.
January 3rd-January 14th
In their first game up north at Prosper on January 3rd, the Rangers showed great promise, although coming up short in the 4th quarter, falling 50-61. Darryl Brown ’20 came up with 28 points and 12 rebounds and Gavin Perryman ’21 had 10 points and 4 rebounds. The Rangers struggled to find the bottom of the net throughout the game but turned their attention to Allen for their district home opener.
Against Allen, on January 7th, the Rangers fell just short of victory, fighting hard through the finish and losing 54-57. Perryman found success from behind the arc, shooting 50% from 3 and coming up with 2 steals. As a team, the Rangers out-shot Allen, losing the game in the free throw column, shooting only 7 free throws compared to Allen’s 31 shots from the line.
Playing Plano Senior High, the Rangers tipped off at 11:30 on Saturday, January 11th, at Plano. Both Brown and Perryman continued to find success, with Brown finishing with 20 points and Perryman with 17. Cal Linn ’21 also scored in the double digits with 11. The Rangers ultimately fell short again, 58-65, despite their second-half comeback.
Returning home for the white-out game, Jesuit found hard against McKinney but lost 42-53 on January 14th. The Rangers struggled again finding the bottom of the net, shooting 28% from three and 31% from the field. Despite the poor shooting, Brown was able to get 20 points and nab 17 rebounds.
January 17th-January 24th
On January 17th, the Rangers began a three-game win streak as they traveled to Plano East to take on the Panthers. Both Darryl Brown ‘20 and Gavin Perryman ‘21 nabbed double-doubles, with Brown grabbing 11 boards and getting 16 points and Perryman filling up the box score with 10 rebounds and 14 points. The Rangers found Greta success at the free-throw line, going 13-18 while East went 0-3, helping the Rangers come out with a 61-54 victory.
Coming back to Walsh Gym, the Rangers continued their free throw shooting hot streak, going 9-12 from the line and dominating Plano West 64-47 behind Brown’s 30 points and 14 boards and Perryman’s 22 points and 6 assists. The Rangers also shot 52% from the field, helping them to continue their win streak.
Going up to McKinney to play Boyd, the Rangers extended their win streak out to three games, winning 56-52, assisted by Brown’s 12 points along with Cal Linn ‘21 and his 11 points. The Rangers had every shooting stat above 40%, going 52% from the field, 43% from 3, and 56.5% from the free-throw line. The Rangers led the entire game, helping them to improve to 3-4.
January 28th-February 11th
The Rangers restarted their district schedule on January 28th, hosting Prosper at home. Darryl Brown ‘20 and Gavin Perryman ‘21 led the way, with 17 points and 14 points respectively. The Rangers again struggled with their shooting, going 5-20 from 3, but they were able to find success in the paint, scoring 26 from the lane. Even though they found success close to the hoop, the Rangers fell in a close game, losing 47-51.
The Rangers played Allen again, but ultimately fell short 76-59. 16 points from Brown, 11 points from Cal Linn ‘21, and 10 points from Will Cordle ‘21 helped keep the Rangers in the game along with 22 paint points and 17 points off the bench. The Rangers fought hard and shot the ball well, shooting above 40% again, shooting 50% from the field and 45% from 3.
Battling Plano at home, the Rangers faced off against the Wildcats on February 2nd. Brown finished with 16 points and Perryman with 15 points, while Perryman shot 3-3 from behind the arc. The Rangers fell short in the final minutes of the 4th quarter in their lowest-scoring game of district play, losing 36-39.
The Rangers headed up to McKinney for the final time, playing the McKinney Lions on February 7th. Fighting through 2 overtime periods, the Rangers fell just short, losing on a 3-pointer and a free throw in the last 40 seconds of play. The Rangers battled hard, fueled by 22 points from Brown, 13 points from Perryman, and 8 points from Camden Roy ‘21.
In their second-to-last home on February 11th, the Rangers faced off against Plano East and fell 62-47. In a scrappy and aggressive game, Perryman led the way with 22 points and Camden Roy ’21 followed with 7 points and 2 steals. The Rangers fought hard and shot well from the line, hitting 73% of their free throws.
Conclusion
The Rangers look to finish their season strongly, facing West on Friday, February 14th and playing Boyd on Senior Night at home on February 18th for the final game of the season. Make sure to show and support your Rangers as they look to end on a high note.
