Towards the beginning of the NFL season, I wrote an article that posed the question of who should be the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, the rookie sensation Dak Prescott or the seasoned veteran Tony Romo. Now, this question has been answered.
Tony Romo recently held a press conference where he announced that he would be handing the starting quarterback job to Dak Prescott.
He emotionally elaborated on how “getting hurt was a soul-crushing blow” and how he felt “a tremendous amount of guilt on having let [his] teammates, fans, and organization down.”
Romo continued, stating that “football is [a] meritocracy. You aren’t handed anything. You earn everything every single day.” He then humbly and graciously announced that “[Dak Prescott] has earned the right to be our quarterback.”
Dallas is experiencing a bit of déjà vu, given how Tony Romo seems to be losing his job to a superstar rookie. Ten years ago, Romo, a rookie making a name for himself just like Dak Prescott, stole the starting job from the then quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, Drew Bledsoe.
However, we should not look back at Tony Romo’s career with scorn but rather with admiration. Throughout his time as a Cowboy, Romo has posted an impressive 78-49-0 record, thrown for more yards and touchdowns than the all-time great Cowboys Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, and according to Bleacher Report possesses a career quarterback rating of 95.8, higher than that of Tom Brady and Joe Montana, who many consider the two greatest quarterbacks of all time.
What is holding Tony Romo back then in the eyes of many? No Super Bowl rings. This could change however if this year’s Cowboys can continue this amazing performance. It would be well deserved for Romo to ride off into the sunset with a ring.
In the end, no matter what happens to Tony Romo, like him or not, we should thank him for being our quarterback.
