Strong drives and exceptional putts led the Jesuit varsity golf team to its 6th consecutive district championship victory. The team’s strong performance allowed them to take the top two spots in the tournament and have all 12 of the top 12 individual players of the tournament. Not a single golfer from another school finished in the top 12.
Jesuit golf won the district championship on March 25th and 26th with a commanding victory over district competitors W.T. White, RL Turner, and Irving MacArthur. Jesuit commanded the leaderboard, with Jesuit B taking first place overall and Jesuit A finishing in second.
For two days, the individual performances of the Jesuit B golfers combined to total a final score of just 597 strokes. Finishing only 17 strokes behind, Jesuit A was far ahead of the third place finisher, WT White, who trailed by 133 strokes. In the individual standings, Max McLeod, ’17, finished first, two strokes ahead of second place finisher Jake O’Gara ’18, who was followed by Andrew Buckley ’18, coming in 3rd.
After the finish, Jackson Houston ’18, noted that, “We did a really good job, evidenced by all 12 Jesuit golfers being able to advance on to regionals. We had a great team this year and I’m really proud of how well we did.” Jackson, a second year sophomore, complimented the seniors for their leadership throughout the year, stating, “They were really easy to get behind, and their leadership helped us to get and better and grow closer as a team.”
In addition, Andrew Buckley ’18 commented, “I’m really thankful for all the leadership from the coaches and seniors this year. We had an awesome tournament, and I look forward to helping lead the team next year along with my fellow golfers.” Buckley, who finished in 3rd place in the tournament, shot a 74 and a 75 on the first and second days respectively. He also expressed his thankfulness for the coaching that was given to him by assistant coach Nate Dombrowski, who, in his first year of coaching at Jesuit, helped lead the team to victory.
Although they will lose several seniors next year, the team will be in the good hands of the current juniors and sophomores as well as head coach Cathy Marino, who has helped lead Jesuit to many of its district championships. With the training given to them over the past few years, the team will look to continue their district winning streak in the upcoming year, and even achieve victories at the next levels of regionals and state.
