14 golfers sit around a table, scorecards in hand, comparing one score to the next. Each member reminiscing about one hole, how they hit the ball just right and it landed exactly where it needed to land.
This was the conversation of both JV and Varsity golf teams after their tournaments. The JV tournament on Febuarary 16th at Canyon Creek marked the first spring tournament for the Jesuit junior varsity golf team. They opened the season strong with the A team landing a first place finish, followed closely by the B team who secured a second place finish. JV golfer Cole Morin ’17 said that the team “really played well in the first tournament. Golf is usually seen as an individual’s game but in the tournaments we play, you really have to rely on the shots and calls your teammates make. Last Tuesday, I felt like my team was really just hitting their groove. In tournaments like these, you get paired with another player from another school to play through the course with you. In the beginning of this tournament, I was really shy with the guy I was playing with, but by the end, he and I were making jokes if one of us missed a putt or had a bad drive. It’s really amazing how much you learn about a guy just by playing a round of golf with him.” Cole believes that the best part of the tournament wasn’t getting to play the game he loves, rather, it was “being able to sit at that table after taking home first place and just see the look of accomplishment in everyone’s eyes. It’s a great feeling being able to compare score cards when everyone’s score is low.”
Building off of the success of the JV team, the Varsity team did just as well with the A team taking home first place and the B team hauling home 3rd in the tournament on Monday at DAC Blue. While this wasn’t the spring opener for the Varsity, it was the first tournament in a month for the team. Junior David Seagram thought that “it was a really good tournament to come back from a break from. It’s always hard when the JV team comes back after the kind of tournament they had and tell us all about how great it feels to bring home a first place trophy. The type of people on this team are the type of people who just want to get out there and play. After a month of pure practice, we were ready to get our hands on a first place trophy too.”
The team started off a little shaky as the tournament went underway, but as the course progressed “our swings got smoother and our putts became better.” says senior Camden Suhy. Suhy added that “it was a good driving day for us in the beginning but our putts just weren’t on ‘par’. Ha.” Every bad golf pun aside, the varsity team got it under control and were able to end up on top with the first place finish.
Both teams hope that their wins will help propel them to gain the same outcome in their joint tournament next Monday.
