Over one hundred new art pieces, inspired by Picasso, join Jesuit’s permanent museum collection. Throughout October, Mr. Howard organized his 3rd student exhibition, made up of pieces from student artists in Drawing I, 2D Design, AP Drawing, Ceramics. The exhibition, called La Exibicíon: A Tribute to Picasso, runs from November 6 to the 24th and showcases the work of 96 art students. The exhibit adds much-needed color to the hallway outside the prayer courtyard near the lecture hall and is sure to pique the interest of anyone walking by.
Museum Director Mrs. Hunt Blanc says that she isn’t as involved in the student exhibition this year as much as she was last year, but she comments that in addition to the pieces outside the lecture hall, there are satirical comics in the Terry Center and sculptures in the B hall. Mr. Howard, who teaches Drawing as well as 2D design and is the man behind the exhibition, says the pieces, “add an exciting new element to the hallway.” Mr. Howard says he worked closely with Mrs. Hunt Blanc to compliment the student art with some professional art that is in Picasso cubist style or even inspired by him.
Ethan LaCour ’17, a student in Drawing I, says that for him, having his piece in the exhibit is a “novel thing,” and he’s says it’s especially cool because he’s never taken a drawing class before and even though he admits his drawing may not be, “some magnificent piece,” he says having his drawing featured is a very cool experience. Ceramic student, Bijan Kamalipour ’18, says he is “grateful that [his] sculpture was featured”, because he,”got to show off the skills Mr. Ochs taught him.” Even students who aren’t currently in art classes can enjoy the pieces on display. Jake Carlson ’18, says the art, “adds more variety to the museum,” and that it is a “change of pace” from the professional art. The student exhibition is a great opportunity for student artists to show off their hard work even if they aren’t experienced.
The exhibition will close on Saturday, November 21, and a closing ceremony will wrap up the featuring of the student art. On that evening, the closing reception for the exhibition will take place from 6-7 Pm and will immediately precede the final production of the Picasso-inspired fall play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile.
