The ball rolls down the unforgiving green, appearing on track to completely miss the hole which would set up a putt for par by John Michael Trevino ’17. Suddenly, the ball breaks left, picking up speed as it rolls and finally sinks into the hole for a long birdie putt for the Rangers. Just one of many, John Michael’s putt helped to claim Jesuit’s victory.
Jesuit Golf remains a contender in the fight for a state championship. With varsity constantly performing with impressive scores in their tournaments, it is easy to forget the other victories that Jesuit Golf has. Winning their past two tournaments, Jesuit’s JV Golf team is showing themselves to be true contenders for the top spot in their division.
On October 13, Jesuit’s JV Gold team, consisting of Mariano Barbosa ’19, Kevin Currier ’19, Forrest Park ’19, John Michael Trevino ’17, and Mateo Trevino ’19 emerged on top at the Plano JV tournament. Playing at the tedious Twin Creeks golf course in Allen, the team, led by a strong round from Mariano Barbosa, was the clear victor of the tournament.
Mariano Barbosa ’19, who finished with a 73 on the day, led the team, followed by Forrest Park ’19, who ended his day with a 74 overall. With the top two spots secured in the individual rankings, Jesuit was poised for a victory at the end of the day, ultimately finishing with a 389 overall score. A skilled Plano West team finished second overall.
With four out of the five victors being freshmen, the young team sure makes up for their inexperience with their unbeatable skill and unstoppable will to ensure their victories. Says John Michael Trevino, ’17, “The freshmen are great players. They’ve really met their challenges head on.”
Led by two great coaches, Coach Cathy Marino and Coach Nate Dombrowski, the team is improving their skills so that they can take on future challenges in upcoming tournaments. They look forward to the tests, and they feel that their hard work and dedication puts them in a good position for their future tournaments. Mariano Barbosa, ’19, declares that “the team has a great chance. We’ve really shown our skills in the last two tournaments.”
The team looks to capitalize on their recent two victories at the upcoming tournament on November 3rd, where they will be competing at The Courses at Watters Creek. With mounting potential thanks to never-ending practices and long days at the range and course, Jesuit’s young JV team searches for their next victory. Confident in their skills, they look forward to meeting the challenge and taking yet another trophy to add to their growing collection of first place finishes.
