Freshmen Football Up Against Plano East, Coppell

-

It’s Thursday night, game night. The match-up tonight will be Jesuit vs. Plano East. A whistle blown, a ball placed, the players take to the field.

On Thursday September 3, both Blue and Gold teams secured wins, bringing their records to 2-0. The past two games have been mostly successful for both the freshman teams, 3 wins and 1 loss total. Blue team offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sean Gavin talked about the Blue game, “We got up early on them and really just tried to run the ball, run the clock out in the second half.” They won 25-12

Blue Players of Week:
Offense- QB Brody Hilberth, OL Wyatt Ciccarelli, OL Josh Lewis, WR Cooper Shawl, & WR Brennan Louviere
Defense- LB Ryan Salvia & LB Collin Kenny

On the Gold side of things, the score was 25-12 in the Rangers favor. “We dominated all of the game,” linebacker Caden Carlson said. He continued, “The team showed great effort throughout the game and gained a lot of confidence.” Coach Gavin remarked that Gold was able to run the ball very effectively despite being slow out of the gates in the first half. “We really picked it up in the second half,” he said.

Gold Players of Week:
Offense- OL JC Erickson, OL Nick Triantos, QB/RB Matthew Priddy, WR Nick Hafertepe
Defense- LB Caden Carlson, DE Wyatt Hummel, and DL Matthew Mancillas

Coppell was the teams’ most recent opponent and proved to be the most difficult thus far. Freshman football Head Coach Bob Wunderlick said, “Blue Team won 21-20 in a great, come from behind victory.” Although they were up against the ropes early, the defense made crucial plays late. “Our QB Brody Hilberth had another good game, as did Wide Receivers Joey Richard, who had a big touchdown catch, and Donovan Fitch who got a lot of yardage on receptions,”  said Coach Sean Gavin. “The Blue offense had a great scoring drive late in the game, a drive led by the running of Jacob Jowdy and Peter Buell,” Wunderlick added, and continued that the Blue offensive line played well also.

Unfortunately, Gold suffered their first loss of the season. Coach Wunderlick said, “the team was winning 7-0 at halftime, but Coppell took the lead late in the game.” Despite losing 25-20, Gold put up a fight, making big plays late to try to close the gap. They fought up until the last play, Coach Wunderlick said, “They recovered an onside kick to give the team a chance to win on a last play, hail mary pass, one that fell incomplete.”
