The freshman team traveled out to Arlington this past Thursday night to take on the Bowie Volunteers. This game proved to be solid for both the Ranger Blue and Gold teams.
On this hot Thursday evening, the first to take the field was the Blue Team at 5:30. Following this game, the Rangers Gold Team took on the other Bowie freshman team into the first game, coach Bob Wunderlick, wanted his team to “utilize the arm and feet of our dual threat QB, Alek McGlone ‘18.”
For the Blue Team, many players took Coach Wunderlick’s advice from the start, not giving Bowie a chance to creep up on them. Their offense played really well as a team with their all-star QB McGlone stepping up and throwing passes to Aidan Johnston ’18, son of the former Cowboy great, Daryl “Moose” Johnston, and solid receiver for the Blue Team. In this game , Johnston made some key receptions to help secure the win.
The offense was not the only group that stood out in this. The defense had a shutout in this game, even limiting Bowie to very few yards to help secure a 27-0 victory and a 1-0 start for the Ranger Blue Team.
Going into the next game, the plan for the Blue Team was to “be a ball controlled offense to keep their speedy skill players off the field,” according to head coach Bob Wunderlick.
In this game, the Gold Team’s offense clicked early on in the game with the help of offensive standouts Jack Tabor ’18 and Sam Fields ’18. On the other side of the ball, the killer defense led by Hank Bitterman, Cade Brewer, and Jacob “The Hulk” Totah stepped up to insure a Ranger victory. After Jesuit took the lead 21-14 with three minutes left, the Ranger defense stepped up and held the Volunteer offense on the one-yard line in a nail-biting finish.
Although they played hard, the Rangers let the Volunteers stick around. Thankfully, the Rangers showed they are the stronger team in the end and started off to a good 1-0 start with a 21-14 final score.
According to freshman Jack Tabor, the game was a “total team effort, the offensive line blocked really well and we punched it into the end zone. We just clicked as a team and everyone did their jobs.”
For both teams, according to Coach Wunderlick, the goal all season long is to “improve, to play hard, and to compete.”
Today both Ranger teams look to improve their record to 2-0 vs Plano East.
