Track Season in Review

-

The Jesuit Track Team had a great season this year with a District Championship, success at area and regionals, and senior Andrew Pott advancing to state– the first runner to advance to state for the 800 meter in Jesuit’s history. The Jesuit track team put on a dominant performance at districts.

Both the Varsity and JV teams won. The winning teams at districts are decided by a cumulative point total of all of the events. The events included throwing, jumping, sprinting, relays, and distances. Jesuit took home several top five finishes in shot put, discus, pole vault, 1600(1 mile), 3200(2 mile), and the 800 meters. Senior Trey Elliot ’14 won shot and discus with senior Kyle Shannon ’14 finishing close behind at second in both events. Senior Dillon Smith ’14 placed first in 1600 and 3200 meters, and sophomore brothers Connor ’16 and John Garvey ’16 finished second and fourth in both events. Andrew Pott ’14 finished first in the 800 meters.

track2Senior Patrick Campbell ’14 placed first in the pole vault, with junior Dan Carver ’15 and sophomore Jack Whelan ’16 coming in third and fourth.  All of these young men advanced to the area meet as a result of their great performances at districts.

At the area meet, the success continued for Jesuit. Elliot and Shannon once again dominated the throwing events, with Elliot winning in both and Shannon placing third in discus. Jesuit’s long distance duo, Smith and Connor Garvey, placed first and second in the 3200. Pott won the 800 meters, and Campbell won in pole vaulting. Elliot, Shannon, Smith, Garvey, Pott, and Campbell all advanced to regionals with their top finishes at area. At regionals, the Rangers faced talented competition but still placed top five in many of the events. Smith placed fifth in the 3200, Elliot placed fourth in shot put, Campbell placed third in pole vaulting, and Pott placed second in the 800 meter.

Pott’s second place finish at regionals advances him to state. He is the first runner at Jesuit to advance to state for the 800. Senior Captain Smith had this to say about his final season at Jesuit, “Last track season was by far my favorite and most memorable. With a sophomore competing for the #1 spot on the team, a freshman going 4:34 in the mile, and an 800 runner moving on to state, my senior year of track was my most enjoyable. My last track season at Jesuit was one for the books … with ups and down, PRs and injuries, I wouldn’t trade it for any other.”

Long-distance runner Connor Garvey had this to say about the team’s season, “Our team had a great season, especially winning districts. The distance team and field events led the team to victory, and I look forward to seeing what our track and cross country team can accomplish in the future.” Jesuit Track had a great season, led by their seniors who performed at a very high level throughout the season. Jesuit won a district championship, and may possibly have a state championship runner with Pott.
