Last season, the Jesuit varsity lacrosse team did a phenomenal job, earning a 13-1 record. From there, they went on to the final four in the playoffs. In the semifinals, the Rangers suffered from a devastating loss to the Episcopal School of Dallas. Ever since that loss, the Rangers have been hungry for revenge and an even better season.
For the past few months, the Jesuit varsity lacrosse team has been working in the offseason in preparation for this upcoming season. The weight room has become a sanctuary for them in which they strive to become faster, stronger, and tougher as a team. By pushing each other to the limits in the weight room and on the field, they have built team chemistry with each other, team chemistry that will surely pay off in the season.
Coach Surran, varsity lacrosse head coach, said, “We wanted to get bigger, stronger, and faster. We wanted to do a better job in the weight room than we have ever done before.” The time and hard work in the weight room shows the team’s dedication to becoming better as a whole. Along with the time and hard work, the team built a work ethic that will carry the team to a promising season.
Coach Surran also said, “The kids have developed a sense of confidence in one another throughout the fall that hopefully they will be able to rely upon in the spring time.” Confidence is key to any sport, whether it is basketball, golf, rugby, or lacrosse, and it is a trait Jesuit needs for the coming season. This confidence could be a deciding factor in tough games, just like the game against ESD in the previous post-season.
The unpredictable weather this year has not stopped or phased the Jesuit lacrosse team. The team into their practice regiment and is mentally locked in for this season. Zach Kissick ’16 states, “I feel like the team is doing pretty good so far. We were a little rough on the edges at the start, but we are now becoming more fluent and smooth throughout our game.”
The Rangers, just a couple of weeks into practice, are thirsty for another successful season, perhaps even more successful to the previous one. Jesuit’s offseason and current practices are the cornerstone to building a winning season for our Ranger lacrosse team. Kissick says that “going against the best players in Texas every day in practice is preparing us for all the kinds of competition that we’ll be playing this year.”
Jesuit does indeed have some of the best players in Texas as quite a few of them already have offers to play in college. These players have stepped up as leaders in the offseason to help make each other better players. Regarding how prepared the team is for the season, Coach Surran says, “Early indications are by the first game,” so we will see the Rangers cash in all their hard work in the offseason in the first game of the season. This year will hopefully be just as great as the last, potentially even better.
