Jesuit Summer Theater Program

-

From June 10 to June 28, Jesuit will be hosting a co-ed Summer Theater program which will foster 40 students, ranging from 6th grade to 12th grade.

The three week program is designed to refurbish the basic aspects of theater arts among experienced actors and actresses, and it will instruct students on how to become a well-rounded actor.

“The program will produce a full-length show while also providing small workshops for actors on skills such as movement, mask work, and script interpretation,” explained Mr. David Myers, the theater program coordinator.

The students will be broken up into two groups, one group for high school students and the other for middle school students.

Mr. Myers stated that,  “[Those enrolled] represent 19 local middle and high schools and are co-ed, ranging in ages from 11 to 18. Also, half are middle school students, and half are high school students.  I think that this really proves that interest in the arts is high in our community.”

The summer theater program’s main goal is to teach specific skills which help one become a well-rounded actor. The skills include: play analysis, acting, voice and speech, improvisation and mask, movement, scene study, and design theory. Acting and design theory are the skills which will mainly be focused on within the program.

Through the skills of acting, the program will guide the students through the basic techniques of acting, going through each topic with utmost care. As for the skill of design theory, the program will focus on guiding the student through constructing a unified set that supports the themes which are vital to the play at hand.

Overall, the Jesuit Summer Theater program will be a great way to explore new interests in the arts, or for those who have experience in the arts, the camp will provide a way to perfect their skills.

Myers also added, “This is our opportunity to take good actors and make them really polished and really confident.”

It appears that the stage is set, so to speak, for the Jesuit Summer Theater program. Although the enrollment has closed, questions can be directed toward Mr. David Myers at [email protected].
