The Jesuit Golf team is no team to mess with. Practicing in the hot sun on the freshly cut greens of the course, the finely outfitted team never fails to bring their “A” game in their after school practices. Recognized as the home of former state champion Jordan Spieth ’11, this dedicated Varsity team looks forward to this 2012 season to dominate and do what it does best: win tournaments.
To kick off this exciting season, the Varsity team participated in the well-known tournament named the Bart Granger in Pecan Valley held on Sept. 21/22. Competing against 52 of the best golf teams in the state of Texas, the Jesuit Varsity Golf team finished in 5th place, a very promising start. Varsity also tied a team-record low score of 284 in the third round. With this tied record and outstanding score, the team came home happy.
With a great start under its belt, the varsity team continued on to grab the 9th place in the State Preview in Austin on Oct. 8th. Battling against 19 of the top 5A teams in Texas, Josh Radcliff ’12 led his team into the top 10 of the tournament, finishing 7th in the individual in the State Preview. Head Coach Marino said that Radcliff has been “the low individual” for this Jesuit Varsity team, performing excellently in both the Bart Granger and the Austin Preview.
Similarly, the Jesuit JV Golf team did not fail to impress with an excellent 1st place victory in their first tournament of the season. Confident and excited, the JV shot an excellent round of 309 to win the Plano Invitational at Firewheel Lakes in late September. A key player of this 1st place victory was Sean Badger ‘14, winning the individual with a score of 72. However, in their second tournament, the JV team scored even better at 308 to win themselves 2nd place. Following this tournament, the JV team took 2nd place behind Plano West at the Plano Invitation at Pecan Hollow. One key player was Andrew Young ’16 who shot a great 73 points to finish 2nd in the individual.
Seeking to improve their earlier scores, the Varsity team went back to the greens with a vengeance. Landing each shot beautifully, the Varsity team grabbed a demanding 1st place in their tournament at Firewheel Bridges on Oct. 24, the Lake Highlands Invitation. Playing some younger legs in this tournament, the Varsity team recognizes the leading performance by Junior Sam Rosenberg who shot 71/71 and won the individual title.
With only one more tournament remaining, the Varsity team looks forward to putting their name on the charts with the top teams in Texas. Also, Marino is proud to announce that three members of the Varsity team, Josh Radcliff ’13, Moose Valleti ’13, and Thomas Allen ’13, have all signed letters of intent to play college golf. Satisfied with the performance of both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, Coach Marino says that “It has been a very good Fall for the golf team and we look forward to an even better spring!”
