Brother for Others: Helping Those Who Need it Most

-

On February 4, 2012, Jesuit’s Brothers for Others club will host the Brothers for Others Extravaganza. The club, recently founded by Dennis Kamara ’13, maintains a goal of “helping Jesuit students and students with disabilities develop unique relationships through various activities.”

“My hope for this club is to not only spread the awareness of different disabilities such as Down syndrome and autism,” said Kamara, “but also to raise money for charities that fund research for these disabilities such as Autism Speaks and the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas.”

The Extravaganza, taking place in the Jesuit cafeteria, will involve students from Jesuit and Notre Dame School eating, hanging out, and participating in various fun and games. Kamara has taken a different approach in anticipation of the extravaganza, though, instructing his club members to not only “help [Notre Dame students]” but also to “learn from them.” The event will be from 12-2:30 p.m.

Also, on Saturday, March 4 BFO will host a March Madness 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Jesuit. The entry fee will be $5 per person, with the money going to support the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas and Autism Speaks.

Kamara, when asked about his motivation for creating the club, said: “My brother, who has Down syndrome, inspired me to create this club. When I was younger I thought that we wouldn’t be able to do normal activities because of his disability; however, he proved me wrong.

“His vivacious personality helped me to realize how dynamic and energetic he is. Because of my brother, I wanted others to experience the joy that special needs children bring.”

Kamara is focused on getting to know the kids on a more personal level, saying, “I’m hoping to learn some of the interests that the special needs children have. Everyone has a unique personality, and I really want to get the chance to learn some of the special needs kids’ individual qualities.”
