Week 2 of the NFL is over, and it started when the Eagles beat the Vikings 34-28 on Thursday Night Football. Now a lot has happened since, so let’s dive in with four week 2 overreactions.

The Refs are still “The Refs”

NFL Refs have been known to make controversial calls throughout NFL history. Photo Credit to: sportingnews.com

A huge conversation about last season was about how the refs seemed to be worse than ever before. Well, I am here to announce that this season is no different. Multiple controversial and questionable calls. Let’s start with the Cowboys game. On 3rd and 7, the Cowboys were in the red zone. Dak Prescott drops back, and throws an incomplete pass to CeeDee Lamb. The Cowboys seemingly are going to have to kick a field goal. however, a penalty shows up and the refs call a roughing the passer penalty on John Franklin-Myers. John Franklin-Myers was just trying to get a sack, and Dak threw the ball at the last second. He did hit Dak low, but I think it was too weak of a call. Now, as a Cowboys fan, the hit did not look good. However, I don’t think that the call was correct. Another call I don’t like was the Commanders versus the Broncos. The Broncos had just scored a hail mary touchdown, but needed a two-point conversion to tie the game. Russell Wilson threw the ball incomplete to Courtland Sutton. It looked like the Commanders defensive back had made contact with Sutton in a way to prevent him from making the catch. However, no pass interference call was made, so the game ended. Just like that. Now the situation the Cowboys were in, the call didn’t matter. The Cowboys won by 20 points. In the Broncos game, this no-call was the game-deciding moment. If the refs are going to mess up calls, save that for the middle of the game, where nobody can blame you for it. However, if it is game-defining play, maybe pay a little more attention.

Brandon Staley will be fired by the end of the season

The Chargers are Top 10 in passing yards, they have put up a total of 58 points in 2 games. They are 0-2. Who’s fault is this? Not Justin Herbert’s, not Keenan Allen’s, not Austin Ekeler’s, this is Brandon Staley’s fault. An 0-2 start already means you have an uphill battle to make the playoffs. If the Chargers don’t make the playoffs, then Brandon Staley is out. But what is stopping the Chargers from pulling the plug now? I mean, after that embarrassing wild card loss, I would’ve already pulled the plug. But the Chargers haven’t, and it will cost them in the long run. There’s nothing else to really say. Brandon Staley is not a good coach, and if the Chargers keep him, then that is proof that they don’t want to win. Don’t worry Charger’s fans, he’ll be gone soon.

We can’t count out Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers

If you thought the Buccaneers would be a horrible team this year, raise your hand. Okay, let’s try something new. If you thought they would start 2-0, raise your hand. Now put your hand down, because unless you are a Buccaneers fan, you’re lying. The Buccaneers looked like a bad team. I mean, losing Tom Brady will do that to you, just ask Bill Belichick. But not only that, they also have a horrible coach. And yet, Baker Mayfield is putting up good numbers, and the team is winning games. They could easily win the NFC South with the schedule they have. If they do, they can take advantage of home field they get for winning a division, and they can make a second-round playoff push. it probably won’t last long, but at least there’s hope for the Bucs. Although, I say “Buccaneers fans,” do they really exist? I’m pretty sure it’s just “Patriots fans that switched because of Tom Brady,” but whatever. Like I said, Baker Mayfield is having a great start, but only time will tell if it will last.

Puka Nacua and Bijan Robinson should be the favorites for OROY

I bet if I said Puka Nacua would be a front-runner for offensive rookie of the year not even 3 weeks ago, I would have been called crazy. But now, the odds are +600 for the Rams receiver. He has broken multiple rookie records. including most receptions in a game by a rookie. He has taken the world (fantasy football community) by storm in just 2 games. What can he do with 15 more games? We’ll see. I also wonder when Cooper Kupp comes back, will that affect Nacua’s game? I don’t know. And now, everyone’s favorite. Or, maybe just every UT fan’s favorite, Bijan Robinson. Bijan Robinson has been the favorite from the start. He seems to be the most electric player on the field. The former Longhorn has put up a total of 255 yards all-purpose, and a touchdown. He has highlight plays already, and it’s only week 3. Now things might drastically change over the course of the season, right now, I’m taking Bijan and Puka as my favorites to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Everyone can celebrate that football is back, except Chargers fans (sorry Chargers fans). So there you have it. Four takeaways from the second week of the NFL season. How will these hold up during the season? I have no clue. But I guess we’ll find out. And yes, this conclusion is copied and pasted from my NFL Week 1 Overreactions: Being Way Too Conclusive article.
