April 2013

In 1942 Jesuits were unheard of in Dallas. My friends at Highland Park Junior High asked me why I was going to a ‘Jews-u-it’ school. We didn’t know you were Jewish!’”

Tuition was $100/year. I was given a half scholarship but could only pay $50 that freshman year. No problem.

Our Principal, Fr. Mulhern, told us we could only have a basketball team on the condition that we sell 100 season tickets at $3.00 each by Nov. 1st.  I sold one and bought one and we had the first Ranger Basketball team.

Our first football games were played on a makeshift field behind the old school building with a goal post abutting the cyclone fence on Oak Lawn and some wooden fan stands three levels high.

For baseball we had to scrape off part of the field to make the baseball infield.  Extra points and home runs went over the fence onto Oak Lawn Ave.

Then Mr. Mike Kammer, S.J. began the Philothespic Society. I was the first voted a member after the chartering meeting I missed.  We put on Twelfth Night and the most memorable moment for us teens was Harry Wren’s Toby kissing Roy LaRocca’s Maria.
