“I enjoy the environment but I enjoy the food more. Their pizzas are delicious along with the chicken parmesan, which is my personal favorite.” – Caleb Fisher ’24
Background of my Experience
I had the opportunity of going to Cane Rosso last Saturday night, January 21st, to celebrate my friend George Horvat’s 17th birthday. We had a great time, and while this wasn’t my first time going here, I was super satisfied with my meal and also the atmosphere of Cane Rosso. The NFL Divisional Round was on at the time, and there’s not a better feeling than hanging out with friends, enjoying great food, and watching football. If you are not familiar with Cane Rosso, it is one of the best places to grab contemporary Italian food or consume their world-famous Neapolitan pizzas in the DFW area.
“My personal favorite pizza is the Roni one, it consists of bacon maramalde and pepperoni. I highly recommend it and would consider it if you like pepperonis.” – Reid Mcmillan ’24
History
Cane Rosso was born when owner Jay Jerrier went to Italy on his honeymoon with his wife and fell in love with true, official pizza from the country itself. He was so inspired, that he himself wanted to replicate his experience in Italy but put his own twist on pizza and pasta when he returned to Dallas. And the rest is history… He started out as a mobile catering oven in 2009, and people fell in love with the idea. Â This sprouted into his first-ever restaurant location in 2011 in Deep Ellum. In this February edition of D Magazine, The Pizza Issue, named Cane Rosso one of the best local pizza joints in the Dallas area. It is one of the city’s first Naples-certified restaurants. According to the VPN (Verace Pizza Napoletana), authorizing a Naples-certified restaurant means that it “certifies that the pizzeria which shows it outside,” realizes an excellent product of Neapolitan tradition.
According to Google Reviews, Cane Rosso’s Lakewood on Gaston Ave. location has roughly a 4.5-star rating, a rating that consists of their customer service needs, great hospitality, and don’t forget their food. Obtaining above a 4-star rating in the restaurant business is very difficult, it requires consistency, patience, and also the ability to market and brand your business over time. Throughout the Dallas area, there are seven restaurants scattered throughout the metroplex and the North Texas area that hold a large foundation in their area.
Recommendations
If you enjoy a great chopped salad that goes along with your entrée or pizza, I would highly recommend checking out the classic Caesar salad. This salad consists of romaine hearts, lots of parmesan, garlic croutons, and white anchovy. If you are not a Caesar salad fan, I would look the other way and try the Capra. The Capra has an assortment of goat cheese and almonds, along with a mixture of mixed greens on top of dried cherries and tomatoes.
Sandwiches have become very popular in this Italian restaurant. There is a selection of choices, but the go-to is the chicken parmesan sandwich. Think of a chicken parmesan pasta dish, but with a twist with two pieces of the mouth-watering, ciabatta roll. It also comes with a small house salad and is a large portion.
Pizza is foundational and integral to this restaurant. They have two options of reds, classics, and whites. This shows a distinction between red and white pizza sauces. I would highly suggest for the reds category, the Margherita pizza, a classic pizza but with homemade mozzarella. If you want to try something with more variety, look no further at the Jabroni pepperoni pesto pizza with homemade mozzarella. For the whites, the CBF is a great choice for a meat lover pizza. Basically, it is a pesto pizza with roasted chicken and bacon. Lastly, the classics include the Cane Rosso pizza and Luscher’s sausage and roasted peppers + onions. If none of those suit you, I would look at the Build your own category and the Pizza of the month! In my opinion, I would give it a 4.5-star rating.
