During the time of the Wii U, Nintendo decided to make a new Pokémon game. This wasn’t an ordinary Pokémon game but a fighting game that was a collaboration between Nintendo and Bandai. It was called Pokken Tournament. It was first released in 2015 for Japanese arcades, 2016 for the Wii U, and 2017 for the Nintendo Switch.

Now I know this is somewhat of an old game but since a new edition of Pokken Tournament is on the Nintendo Switch and the only other time it was on a game console was on a Wii U, I thought it would be a good idea to give it a small review.

When you first enter the game, you have to fill in information about your character which goes by really quickly. Beat the tutorial which is very basic as well and you are introduced into the world of Pokken Tournament. Now, Pokken Tournament has two parts to it, a single player aspect and a multiplayer aspect.

Single player

Starting with the single player part of the game, there isn’t much to it. There’s only a campaign and Player vs. AI part. The campaign, while helps you get used to the controls of the game, isn’t very interactive. The story is bland, making you fight up a tournament style League until you finally face Shadow Mewtwo, which gets really intense. The good thing about the campaign is that it gradually gets harder and harder meaning you can’t simply stick to what you’ve been doing.

This is a really good thing I like about the campaign because I’m not good at fighting games but the campaign really helped me adjust to the controls and the feel of fighting. The Player vs. AI part is not hard to explain either. You just face a computer opponent of whatever difficulty you set it to and you fight.

Multiplayer

Of course with any modern fighting game, there is a local multiplayer and online multiplayer. The local multiplayer is really fun because of how tense you get fighting your friends in fast-paced action. Local multiplayer really fits this type of game but you shouldn’t get it just to play local multiplayer. Online multiplayer, on the other hand, is really interesting.

Of course, you have the friendly battles and the ranked battles but then there is a group match mode where people can host mini group tournaments where people battle each other to get a higher ranking.

Though there aren’t many of these groups, I found it interesting and kind of fun. The ranked and friendly battles are just like you’d expect, really hard if you’ve only played the game for a little bit and don’t know the combos and controls. The online service is actually pretty fast and there are always people to face.

Overview

Overall, the controls are really simple and easy to learn. After playing for a while, you’ll get a good understanding of what the controls are and how to make good combos. There is a variety of Pokémon to fight as and each is unique in their own right.

Everything is balanced so that one Pokémon is not dominating all the other characters(This means you can’t blame the lag or if one Pokémon is overpowered). The single player is a little lacking in performance but pretty good for getting someone used to the game. The multiplayer is fun and challenging for the more experienced player.

Rating: 7.2/10

Reason: It’s a good game overall. The single player is lacking something to make it stand out and unique but it’s effective and gets you grinding in the campaign. The multiplayer is very good and unique but you need to have a good grip of the controls and understand the game to become successful online.
