    National Essay Winner

    Johnny Stacer won first place in Dallas and in the nation for his essay on "Selling as a Career." Awards: $1,000 year scholarship for SMU and all- expense trip to Detroit. However, Stacer entered the novitiate in February 1951 and could not accept the S.M.U. scholarship. The Salesmanship sent a monetary gift to him at Grand Coteau.

    Lancaster (Lank) Smith, former member of the Notre Dame Coaching staff, is selected as head coach succeeding Don Rossi.

    1940s and early 1950s Baseball Display American Legion Team.

    First Baseball Trophy

    Jesuit sponsored Junior American League Baseball team. Wins first trophy. American Legion Junior League Display items: Team picture 1951-52; 1949 Baseball season ticket book; Baseball shoes: Donor: Joe Leverette ’46 These shoes were owned originally by Donald Schmidt ’44. As was often the case in Jesuit’s early years, not all students could afford their own sports clothing and equipment. Therefore, a student would pass on his items to other students. When Schmidt went into the service for WW II, he gave these shoes to Joe.

    Audie Murphy

    Audie Murphy spoke at the Dad's Club meeting after Dizzy Dean became ill. Murphy was the most decorated of WWII and currently a film actor.

    Golden Gloves

    J.H.S. will be represented by 5 novices in the Dallas regional golden gloves tournament for the first time; J.T. Collins, a finalist in the state bantam weight division in 1945, is coaching the small but enthusiastic group

  • November 1952 1950s Anecdotes

    Mascot Dies

    Mascot Dog “Ranger” dies; replaced by “Ranger II” who dies one month later. The Minister's Diary of March 21 says he "dies of either poison or encyphilitis (sic)." Ranger II, a 7 weeks old German Shepherd, was a gift from the Carmelite Nuns January 29, 1954.

  • February 1953 Anecdotes

    Memorial Service For Joseph Lostetter

    Jesuit held a Marine flag raising in a memorial service for Joseph Lostetter who died in Korea; the Lostetters donated the flag to Jesuit. Lostetter lettered four years in football and baseball. He enlisted in the Marines after graduation. He served in the 1st Marine Division.

    Golf and Boxing

    Golf team referred to as major sport for first time. Boxing team given prominence although earlier editions have mentioned it.

    Building Renovations

    Began work on building expansion for next year. Plans for construction for new Band Room in east attic. Old Band Room into classroom, "construct new classroom on third floor by taking out partitions of retreat rooms, enlarge cafeteria & construct Athletic Director's office in basement leaving present A.D's office for next year's Assistant Principal" 26 cafeteria tables & 269 chairs, steam table and other cafeteria equipment given by Jesuit New Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Naughton provided transportation, painting, etc. for free. A private breakfast on Sept. 5 was the first meal in the new space in appreciation to the Naughtons.

    Most Reverend Augustine Dauglmayr, auxiliary bishop of DFW, presented diplomas to over 200 Catholic H.S. grads of Dallas at Sacred Heart Cathedral

    67 graduates; Bob Spies, President of the Joint Senior Class spoke and Terry Walsh was Student Toastmaster at the Baccalaureate Mass and Breakfast on May 24; Senior Class night held outdoors on May 26

    Fr. Michael Kammer, S. J. replaces Fr. Edward Curry S. J. as principal. Mr. Edward Coles, last year’s athletic director, becomes the assistant principal and prefect of discipline. He replaces Fr. John Vessels, S. J.

    Freshman Beanies

    First reference to freshmen wearing beanies; faculty concerned about hazing Wearing beanies “contributes to this spirit of tradition…the attitude of lower classmen towards upperclassmen…Herein lies the purpose of the beanies, to point out a certain group as being Freshmen and to humble them in an insignificant way in the eyes of others….The Freshmen should view wearing these beanies as part of their duty and responsibility to their school, rather than a deliberate attempt on the part of the National Honor Society to make them look ridiculous. ” - editorial from The Roundup 11/54

    Radio Club

    The Radio Club builds a tesla coil; to illustrate principles of electronics and radio transmission.

  • Spring 1955 1950s Debate

    Jesuit Debate

    Two debate teams take 1st and 2nd places in a tournament among Texas and Louisiana Catholic high schools. The winning team was WM. Hodges and Claiborne Johnson. Johnson was judged the best speaker.

  • May 1955 Sports

    TCIL State Track Champions

    Freddie Schaeffer makes the state aware of Jesuit by pacing the Rangers to the TCIL track title. The senior won 3 individual events, tied for 2nd in another, and anchored the winning sprint relay as Jesuit beat runner-up St. Thomas of Houston by a comfortable 20 points. All times will go as records as this is the first state track meet in TCIL history. It was Jesuit’s second state championship of the school year; the Rangers won the football title last Dec.

    The auditorium was remodeled into classrooms to accommodate the large enrollment. Other improvement were made to the campus.

    Visiting Team Needs Rooms

    "The visiting team from Corpus Christi arrives. . . Four negro boys on the team not finding room anywhere stay with us in one of the first year classrooms."
