  • August 1, 1942 1940s First two years Sports

    Coach Eddie Maher Hired

    Eddie Maher, Jr. is hired as coach at $1,000 a year (Archives). The August 30, 1942 Dallas Morning News notes Jesuit is in the Dallas 8-AA of the Texas Interscholastic League. Maher "will direct the entire athletic program of Jesuit High" (p.7). The Sept. 2 News later reports the team "will open the season Sept. 25 against Waxahachie High. Six letter men reported for practice Tuesday" and Maher is looking for Class A or B teams to play against.

    Basketball 1942-1943

    Basketball Program Approved

    "Students had been informed at assembly that a basketball program will be sponsored if they sell 200 season tickets at one dollar each before December 1st." The Principal's Diary Dec 1 notes the program is assured because 274 season tickets were sold.

    Basketball Begins

    "Basketball team participates in the Plano tournament. Loses to Sunset H.S. in championship round; wins from North Dallas H.S., 28-24 in the consolation bracket, then loses to Plano, 38-9" (Principal's Diary) First home game in gym on January 6, 1943 - North Dallas 22 Jesuit 20 The first mention of the Jesuit basketball team in the DMN cites Jesuit participating against Sunset in a Plano Invitational starting December 30, 1942 (DMN 12/30/1942)

    Classes resume with a general assembly to award letter jackets to football team.     Baseball team 1942-43

    Baseball Program Begins

    The program was granted after many boys asked to play. Rain stopped practice for days and 4 of the better players became ineligible by March 26. The uniforms arrived on the 27th and the principal lamented that "we had very little to put in them". The first game was cancelled against Forest Avenue High School until April 1 at Fair Park at 4:30 p.m. Jesuit lost in the sixth inning 11-0.

    Basketball

    "Coach Clyde Johnson of the Jesuit Rangers still is hoping to get into the Texas Interscholastic League, citing Buckner Home, the Odd Fellows Home of Corsicana and Masonic Home of Fort Worth as more or less private institutions which have been admitted . . . " (DMN February 11, 1944).

    Rangers Nickname

    Ed Maher (first lay faculty member ‘42) gave the football team its nickname “Rangers”; he once lived in the city of Ranger, Texas and liked the town.

    New Football and Baseball Coach

    Don Rossi from Michigan State college is the new football coach and the American Legion baseball coach. He was a major in the army and previously director at Kelly Field & Randolph in San Antonio. On June 2 the Dad's Club welcomed him with a lunch provided by Mr. Neuhoff.

    Gino Biasatti, 190 lb. fullback for Jesuit Rangers, named on the second All-America Catholic H.S. football team for 1949 season.

    Football in Rochester

    Jesuit’s Rangers boarded a chartered airliner at Love Field for Rochester, N.Y. where they will meet Aquinas High in an intersectional schoolboy football game; 25 men made the trip. They lost the game 46-7.

    First Baseball Trophy

    Jesuit sponsored Junior American League Baseball team. Wins first trophy. American Legion Junior League Display items: Team picture 1951-52; 1949 Baseball season ticket book; Baseball shoes: Donor: Joe Leverette ’46 These shoes were owned originally by Donald Schmidt ’44. As was often the case in Jesuit’s early years, not all students could afford their own sports clothing and equipment. Therefore, a student would pass on his items to other students. When Schmidt went into the service for WW II, he gave these shoes to Joe.

    J.H.S. will be represented by 5 novices in the Dallas regional golden gloves tournament for the first time; J.T. Collins, a finalist in the state bantam weight division in 1945, is coaching the small but enthusiastic group

    TCIL State Track Champions

    Freddie Schaeffer makes the state aware of Jesuit by pacing the Rangers to the TCIL track title. The senior won 3 individual events, tied for 2nd in another, and anchored the winning sprint relay as Jesuit beat runner-up St. Thomas of Houston by a comfortable 20 points. All times will go as records as this is the first state track meet in TCIL history. It was Jesuit’s second state championship of the school year; the Rangers won the football title last Dec.

    New School Bus

    On Sept. 13, 1956 the school was presented with its first bus from men who currently have sons at Jesuit. It was presented during a pep meeting before the HIghland Park game. Later, September 16, 1958, the football team traveled to its first season game aboard a new athletic bus presented by Dad’s Club.

    Dedication of Haggar Stadium

    A brief dedication ceremony preceded the game. Fr. John Edwards, S. J. presented a plaque to the Haggars from the Province. Only one side of the stadium has been built.

    New Stadium Dedicated

    "Fr. Provincial arrived to be here for the dedication of the new stadium (Haggar Stadium-Home of the Jesuit Rangers). Mr. and Mrs. Haggar and their two sons and wives were our guests for dinner. A brief dedication ceremony preceded the game; Fr. Edwards presented a plaque to the Haggars from the Province. (The Haggars had contributed about 1/3 of the total cost of the stadium, $125,000). The other side of the stadium must still be built. Jesuit defeated Central Catholic 18-8. The stadium was almost filled."
