In a disheartening bit of news for all Jesuit students and current seniors in particular, Jesuit has announced the postponement of the opening ceremony for the front-of-school renovations that have been ongoing for almost 3 years now.
The extensive renovations to Jesuit’s Inwood-facing side represent one of the most ambitious construction projects the school has embarked on in recent years, and has proceeded apace until now. Featuring a new Chapel, overhauled facade, and new learning center perched over an expanded carpool lane, the project is intended to project a modern, cutting-edge image of Jesuit to the world.
Principal Tom Garrison, when contacted about the delay, gave The Roundup an explanation revolving around the exalted koi fish.
I’ve always wanted a Koi pond. Very peaceful.

Elaborating on this statement, Mr. Garrison added that, “While it is true that the exterior and interior finish out will be completed by the beginning of June, I have asked that a water feature be added under the Porte Cochere.” He offered no explanation on how such an addition would affect traffic flow under the aforementioned Porte Cochere, but insisted that the feature be added as a sign of the tranquil academic environment he aims to cultivate at Jesuit.
Admitting to the engineering challenges associated with the amenity, Mr. Garrison stated that it would, “necessitate some significant concrete re-working, as well as some plumbing and electrical adjustments that will delay the official opening of the space.”
When asked about the specifics of the water feature, Principal Garrison was not forthcoming. He did, however, offer the following statement: “I cannot tell you details about the water feature at this time, other than that there will be flowing water, beautiful foliage, and Koi. Lots of Koi.”
Though some students will no doubt be disappointed in the postponed completion date, we at The Roundup have unshaking faith that the delay will bring about a better campus and a stronger Jesuit.
