“Isn’t the Golden Globes just a big celebration of Hollywood ego?”
Yes, I know, but I don’t really care. So here is 2024 Golden Globes recap.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Winner – Da’Vine Joy Randolph, “The Holdovers”
Nominees:
- Emily Blunt, “Oppenheimer”
- Danielle Brooks, “The Color Purple”
- Julianne Moore, “May December”
- Jodie Foster, “Nyad”
- Rosamund Pike, “Saltburn”
My Opinion: She was phenomenal in The Holdovers and had, like many of the actors who won awards, a nuanced performance for a character that is usually something of a cliche.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture
Winner – Robert Downey Jr., “Oppenheimer”
Nominees:
- Ryan Gosling, “Barbie”
- Robert DeNiro, “Killers of the Flower Moon”
- Charles Melton, “May December”
- William Dafoe, “Poor Things”
- Mark Ruffalo, “Poor Things”
My Opinion: Wow, what a surprise. Let’s be honest with ourselves. Did you think anyone but Robert Downey Jr. would win this award? And you know what? He deserves it; playing the villain when your whole career can be defined by playing a hero is challenging for most actors, and he excelled in this role.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Winner – Ali Wong, “Beef”
Nominees:
- Brie Larson, “Lessons in Chemistry”
- Riley Keough, “Daisy Jones & the Six”
- Elizabeth Olsen, “Love and Death”
- Juno Temple, “Fargo”
- Rachel Weisz, “Dead Ringers”
My Opinion: I haven’t seen much of Beef or other TV shows. But from what I saw of Ali Wong, I was very impressed by her performance.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Winner – Steven Yeun, “Beef”
Nominees:
- Matt Bomer, “Fellow Travelers”
- Sam Claflin, “Daisy Jones & the Six”
- David Oyelowo, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”
- Jon Hamm, “Fargo”
- Woody Harrelson, “White House Plumbers”
My Opinion: Here is a quote that sums up my thoughts on Steven Yeun winning a Golden Globe:
“I’m so glad to see Asians winning!” (maryannbee127 – Instagram)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Television Series
Winner – Elizabeth Debicki, “The Crown”
Nominees:
- Meryl Streep, “Only Murders in the Building”
- Hannah Waddingham, “Ted Lasso”
- Christina Ricci, “Yellowjackets”
- Abby Elliott, “The Bear”
- J. Smith-Cameron, “Succession”
My Opinion: I haven’t watch The Crown…..Sorry I’m not a TV guy.
Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television
Winner – Ricky Gervais: Armageddon
Nominees:
- “Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact”
- “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage”
- “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer”
- “Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love”
- “Trevor Noah: Where Was I”
My Opinion: Irony is a funny little thing isn’t it?
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Television Series
Winner – Matthew Macfadyen, “Succession”
Nominees:
- James Marsden, “Jury Duty”
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach, “The Bear”
- Billy Crudup, “The Morning Show”
- Alexander Skarsgård, “Succession”
- Alan Ruck, “Succession”
My Opinion: Yeah fair.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Winner – Jeremy Allen White, “The Bear”
Nominees:
- Jason Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso”
- Bill Hader, “Barry”
- Jason Segel, “Shrinking”
- Steve Martin, “Only Murders in the Building”
- Martin Short, “Only Murders in the Building”
My Opinion: He curses, he’s intense, he yells… it’s somewhat true about the restaurant industry… so give him the Golden Globe.
Best Motion Picture — Non-English Language
Winner – “Anatomy of a Fall” (France)
Nominees:
- “The Zone of Interest” (United Kingdom)
- “Society of the Snow” (Spain)
- “Fallen Leaves” (Finland)
- “Past Lives” (United States)
- “Io capitano” (Italy)
My Opinion: Anatomy of a Fall only won because it won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival. Yes, it is a great movie, but would it get this far if it didn’t win the Palme d’Or award?
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Winner – Ayo Edebiri, “The Bear”
Nominees:
- Natasha Lyonne, “Poker Face”
- Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary”
- Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
- Selena Gomez, “Only Murders in the Building”
- Elle Fanning, “The Great”
My Opinion: Ayo Edebiri is an awesome actress, and from just a small sample size of her work, I can say that she was definitely the right actor to win this award.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Winner – Kieran Culkin, “Succession”
Nominees:
- Brian Cox, “Succession”
- Pedro Pascal, “The Last of Us”
- Jeremy Strong, “Succession”
- Gary Oldman, “Slow Horses”
- Dominic West, “The Crown”
My Opinion: Yes, I know that these award shows love it when certain films/TV shows win a bunch of awards cause it boosts ratings. And I’m sure that Kieran Culkin was excellent in his role in Succession, but I would like to see a more diverse slate of people win. Pedro Pascal.
Best Motion Picture — Animated
Winner – The Boy and the Heron
Nominees:
- “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”
- “Elemental”
- “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”
- “Wish”
- “Suzume”
My Opinion: The Boy and the Heron is the best animated film of this year. Yes, I said it. But Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had an excellent version of Spider-Man; I don’t care. The Boy and the Heron feels a lot more personal than most films I saw this year; there is a real sense that it comes from Hayao Miyazaki’s heart. This film is profound; it tackles things that I will admit I didn’t understand, and I will say it…it meant to be in terms of themes and meaning on the likes of Spirited Away. I really hope The Boy and the Heron wins the Oscar for Best Picture instead of some big kid company animated film. It deserves the award, and the genre of anime deserves it.
Best Director — Motion Picture
Winner – Christopher Nolan, “Oppenheimer”
Nominees:
- Martin Scorsese, “Killers of the Flower Moon”
- Greta Gerwig, “Barbie”
- Yorgos Lanthimos, “Poor Things”
- Bradley Cooper, “Maestro”
- Celine Song, “Past Lives”
My Opinion: I already see Mr. Harrington smiling somewhere. Yeah, Christopher Nolan was going to win. He’s a big-name director with a meteoritic rise to fame with Oppenheimer. But I’m sure none of that had any role in Nolan winning the Golden Globes.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy
Winner – Emma Stone, “Poor Things”
Nominees:
- Margot Robbie, “Barbie”
- Natalie Portman, “May December”
- Fantasia Barrino, “The Color Purple”
- Alma Pöysti, “Fallen Leaves”
- Jennifer Lawrence, “No Hard Feelings”
My Opinion: What have they done? I’m shocked that Margot Robbie didn’t win this award because Barbie was just that good. Although I’m happy with Emma Stone and believe that she was the right choice, I can’t help but wonder what box they opened here. The Oscars may be different.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama
Winner – Cillian Murphy, “Oppenheimer”
Nominees:
- Bradley Cooper, “Maestro”
- Leonardo DiCaprio, “Killers of the Flower Moon”
- Colman Domingo, “Rustin”
- Andrew Scott, “All of Us Strangers”
- Barry Keoghan, “Saltburn”
My Opinion: What did you think was going to happen?
Best Original Score — Motion Picture
Winner – Ludwig Göransson, “Oppenheimer”
Nominees:
- Robbie Robertson, “Killers of the Flower Moon”
- Mica Levi, “The Zone of Interest”
- Daniel Pemberton, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”
- Jerskin Fendrix, “Poor Things”
- Joe Hisaishi, “The Boy and the Heron”
My Opinion: Yeah, it might be obvious, but let’s all be honest: Joe Hisaishi should have won, and he should have won the Oscar. For a composer of his talent and to be a part of some of the most famous films out there and never win a major is a travesty. Also, is score for The Boy and the Heron is better than Oppenheimer’s. But I’m just a dreamer.
Best Original Song — Motion Picture
Winner – “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell (from “Barbie”)
Nominees:
- “Dance the Night” by Caroline Ailin, Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (from “Barbie”)
- “Addicted to Romance” by Bruce Springsteen (from “She Came to Me”)
- “Road to Freedom” by Lenny Kravitz (from “Rustin”)
- “Peaches” by Jack Black, Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond and John Spiker (from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”)
- “I’m Just Ken” by Andrew Wyatt and Mark Ronson (from “Barbie”)
My Opinion: Half of these songs are from the Barbie movie, and what a surprise that the song that wins is from one of the most famous musicians currently. But again, I’m sure that had nothing to do with it.
Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Winner – “Beef”
Nominees:
- “Lessons in Chemistry”
- “Daisy Jones & the Six”
- “All the Light We Cannot See”
- “Fellow Travelers”
- “Fargo”
My Opinion: All the Light We Cannot See should not have been on this list… I wonder how much Netflix paid for it to be here. Just because your leading actor is blind and playing a blind girl doesn’t mean your film is good… stop using it as a crutch. But yes, Beef was the rightful TV series to win this award.
Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Winner – “The Bear”
Nominees:
- “Ted Lasso”
- “Abbott Elementary”
- “Jury Duty”
- “Only Murders in the Building”
- “Barry”
My Opinion: Here is where I’m going to say my opinion. Ted Lasso should’ve won. But whatever.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Winner – Sarah Snook, “Succession”
Nominees:
- Bella Ramsey, “The Last of Us”
- Helen Mirren, “1923”
- Keri Russell, “The Diplomat”
- Emma Stone, “The Curse”
- Imelda Staunton, “The Crown”
My Opinion: No comment.
Best Television Series – Drama
Winner – “Succession”
Nominees:
- “The Last of Us”
- “The Crown”
- “The Morning Show”
- “The Diplomat”
- “1923”
My Opinion: Which show did you think would win? All throughout this year all I hear was show great Succession was so and seeing that half of these shows I haven’t heard of half of these shows, it pretty obvious that Succession would win this award.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy
Winner – Paul Giamatti, “The Holdovers”
Nominees:
- Jeffrey Wright, “American Fiction”
- Matt Damon, “Air”
- Joaquin Phoenix, “Beau is Afraid”
- Timothée Chalamet, “Wonka”
- Nicolas Cage, “Dream Scenario”
My Opinion: Paul Giamatti has become the modern-day Robert Williams from The Dead Poets Society. He will be the reason someone will be a teacher so they can be like Paul Giamatti from The Holdovers, only to find that life often doesn’t play out like movies. But honestly, even as unoriginal as his character arc might be, he is so lovable. He provides so much nuance to a cliche character that shows his talent as an actor.
Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy
Winner – “Poor Things”
Nominees:
- “Barbie”
- “American Fiction”
- “The Holdovers”
- “May December”
- “Air”
My Opinion: BARBIE DIDN’T WIN!!!!!!! I already hear the outrage… yeah it didn’t, and Poor Things is probably the better movie… And guess what, Barbie fans it isn’t going to win the Oscar either.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama
Winner – Lily Gladstone, “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Nominees:
- Carey Mulligan, “Maestro”
- Sandra Hüller, “Anatomy of a Fall”
- Annette Bening, “Nyad”
- Greta Lee, “Past Lives”
- Cailee Spaeny, “Priscilla”
My Opinion: Yeah she deserve this award. What is there to say.
Cinematic and Box Office Achievement
Winner – Barbie
Nominees:
- “Oppenheimer”
- “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”
- “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
- “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”
- “John Wick: Chapter 4”
- “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1”
- “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”
My Opinion: I am trying to understand what this award means. This is the first time this award has ever been handed out. But my question is that if Barbie wins due to being the highest-grossing film, then why have the award in the first place if the winner is obvious? But let’s just pause a second and be in awe that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour grossed 261 million dollars.
Best Screenplay — Motion Picture
Winner – Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, “Anatomy of a Fall”
Nominees
- Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, “Barbie”
- Tony McNamara, “Poor Things”
- Celine Song, “Past Lives”
- Christopher Nolan, “Oppenheimer”
- Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, “Killers of the Flower Moon”
My Opinion: I am happy Anatomy of a Fall won Best Screenplay. I admit I haven’t seen the film, but I have heard many good things. It also won the Cannes Film Festival. But what I am more interested in is that. Noah Baumbach co-wrote Barbie?
Best Motion Picture — Drama
Winner – Oppenheimer
Nominees:
- “Killers of the Flower Moon”
- “Maestro”
- “Past Lives”
- “The Zone of Interest”
- “Anatomy of a Fall”
Conclusion
Prominent is a good way to sum up this Golden Globe; no huge choice blew me off guard. All your favorite films and TV shows won the awards, and we are all happy. Honestly, I don’t know why people watch the Golden Globes, and not many do, with only around 6 million people watching it in the last two years. And with all the racism, sexism, and other evils of Hollywood, the Golden Globes might not be around for much longer.
