Last week The 60th Anniversary of the Jesuit Sheaner Relays kicked off with a roaring start on Friday evening 3/21. Starting back in 1964, and named after Jesuit Track Coach Herb Sheaner, every year this meet brings some of the fastest athletes from around the nation to compete. This meet is also the largest high school run meet in Texas, and also in the top ten in the entire nation. This year the meet attracted over 100 teams across multiple states such as Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Part of its reason for its fame is because of how the event is run. The event is always executed to perfection with volunteers from Jesuit Faculty, the track team, Jesuit parents, and students working for work grant. Jesuit also hires some of the best officials in the state to run the meet to ensure a fair experience for everyone competing.
“I think it’s cool seeing some of the greatest athletes in the United states competing. seeing people from all over the country competing all at once is really cool.”-Will Price
On Friday evening the meet began with the 3200, its only event for the day with many sub 10 minute performances. Freshman Maddox Click competed in this event finishing 42nd overall out of 54 runners in the 6A standings alone.
Saturday began bright and early at 8:30 in morning. On the menu for the day was all sprinting events with a few long distance events (800, and 1600) as well as all field events except for hammer throwing and the javelin. All running events for the boys were broken up into a prelims lasting from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM and then a finals lasting from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Due to Sheaner Policy all girls had to meet a qualifying time, height, or distance for their respective event so all girls competed in finals. The field events took place throughout the whole day along with the running events.
