On May 21, 2024, the classes of 2026 and 2027 came together in the Mike and Mary Terry Family Foundation center to celebrate the accomplishments of members of the Freshmen and Sophomore classes.

Gathering and Opening Prayer

Mr. Earsing opened the convocation reminding students that “Jesuit Dallas’s honors convocation serves two purposes – one is to honor an individual for his outstanding achievement in an academic discipline, an extracurricular, or in service to our community and to God.  The second reason we gather is to enable the entire class to be honored as a whole – knowing that when we honor our brothers, we honor Jesuit Dallas and all it represents.”  Father Sylvester Tan, S.J. led the opening prayer, which was followed by Michele Williams, the Assistant Principal of Faculty Formation, who read scripture from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

Awards

Haggerty Math and Science Award

Each year, Haggerty Math and Science Scholarships in the amount of $2,785 are awarded to selected rising sophomores and juniors. Funding for the tuition scholarships has been provided by the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas Foundation.  To be considered for the Haggerty Math and Science scholarships, a student must have either a 95 average in current math and science courses or an 85 average in current honors math and science courses. Each candidate is then reviewed by the faculty of both academic departments and the administration of Jesuit to determine his achievements in mathematics and science. Also considered are his activities, leadership roles, and community service involvement.

Principal’s Magis Award

The Magis, Latin for “The Greater,” implies that an individual or pursuit is driven for quality rather than quantity. This award recognizes the students who have exhibited to their teachers an outward desire to grow and learn. Whether through their engagement in class, or through submitted work, these students express the Magis in their class.

Counselors’ Scholarship

Th Counselors’ scholarship is funded by an anonymous benefactor. It is presented to a student who has been active in the Jesuit community, is involved in scouting, church, or other activities, is cooperative and is open to the Jesuit experience. The Counselors’ scholarship consists of a $500 tuition grant.

Guy Delaney Scholarship

In 2018, the Class of 2020, family and friends established a scholarship at Jesuit Dallas in memory of Guy Delaney, Jesuit class of 2020, who passed away tragically in 2018. This award is to be awarded to a rising junior who most exemplifies a desire to put forth his best effort, both academically and athletically, and who reflects the personality, character and spirit of Guy. The Guy Delaney award carries a scholarship amount of $5,000 to be applied to junior year tuition.

Bachendorf Scholarship

The Bachendorf Scholarship was established by Mr. Bock to recognize a sophomore student who has shown the most improvement academically. The $7,500 scholarship will be applied to tuition.

Susan and Jon Piot Family Scholarship

The Susan and Jon Piot Family Scholarship is awarded to a rising Catholic sophomore who exemplifies the Jesuit mission in being a Man for Others, above average academic performance, and continues to participate in one or more extracurricular activities. This scholarship of $11,000 is renewable each year as long as the recipient continues to meet the named criteria

Jesuit’s ‘Man for Others’ Award

Jesuit’s ‘Man for Others’ award is given each year to students who exemplify, in their words and actions, what it means to be a Jesuit student. They have demonstrated in their dealings with others the ability to give of themselves selflessly. This award carries with it a $1,000 scholarship furnished by the Jesuit Women’s Auxiliary.

Dr Mark Knize, Director of Student Formation, concluded the convocation by reciting the following by Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J.

“Above all, trust in the slow work of God. We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new… And yet it is the law of all progress that is made by passing through some states of instability — and that it may take a very long time. And so I think it is with you. Your ideas mature gradually — let them grow. Let them shape themselves without undue haste. Don’t try to force them on. As though you could be today, what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will) will make of you tomorrow. Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be. Give our Lord the benefit of believing that His hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.”
