On May 12, 2017, the glistening eyes of the of the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors watched the Seniors march into the Terry Center as the entire student body of 2017 gathered for the last time. After the Seniors marched in, Mr. Garrison stepped on stage and called the congregation to worship, thus inaugurating the Senior Convocation of 2017. The next hour and a half were dedicated to honoring the Seniors for their achievements in various fields in their time at Jesuit as they prepare to begin a new journey: College.
After the opening prayer by Fr. Sidney, alma mater, and the mission statement by Dr. Kirby, Mr. Garrison stepped on stage to announce the students who received military appointments, ROTC scholarships, and the Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship.
Sam Olden merited a congressional appointment from the Honorable Pete Sessions to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland for his strong character, leadership potential, and academic and athletic success. Vance Holub was the recipient of a congressional appointment from Honorable Pete Sessions, Luke Ostrander was a recipient of a Congressional appointment from the Honorable Eddie Bernice Johnson, and Jack Ayres was a recipient of a Congressional appointment from the Kenny Marchant all to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado for their well-rounded success through Jesuit. John Nuchereno received a full tuition Army ROTC scholarship to Santa Clara University. Jack Matthews received a full tuition Army ROTC scholarship to Boston College. Both John and Jack have valiantly committed themselves to the service and security of the country.
The David O’Brien High School Scholarship recognizes an athlete in the DFW Metroplex and beyond for their character, community service, leadership, academic achievement, and athletic achievement. The David O’Brien Foundation recognized Jacob Palisch for his achievements.
Mr. McDaniel went on to announce the Academic awards and Extracurricular Awards. Will Aberger and Martin Flores received the St. Peter Canisius Award that honors graduating seniors for their dedication to The Roundup. Sam Cormier and Will Naquin were ho nored for their dedication to The Last Roundup. Next, Chase Burciaga’s exceptional service to the school was recognized with The Student Council Award. The E.L. Hohman Award was received by Daniel Ritter for his excellence in music and Ignatian spirit. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation honored Miles Okamoto with a scholarship for his excellent junior year PSAT scores.
Mr. Garrison then presented the remaining honorable awards. First, the Senior Magis Awards, which are given to the seniors who gave the MAGIS, “the more,” to their community in their studies, relationships, and support, were presented to Will Droese, Jaxson Fearing, Beomhak Lee, Eric Miller, and Matt Reilly. Next, the Thomas Wunderlick Award that honors the student who best combined athletic and academic achievement was presented to Connor O’Neil. Then, Teddy Hovivian and Felix Kimbrell received the Ad Astra Award to recognize their leadership and initiative in community service to serve the Greater Dallas community. Abbas Hussain merited the Aloysius Gonzaga Award for his outstanding and selfless devotion to the community.
To honor the students that embody and act what it means to be a Jesuit student who has moved beyond self-interest and self-centeredness, the ‘Man for Others’ Award was presented to Dalton Allen, Alex Garcia, and Mark Hernandez. The JSN Award, meant to honor a senior who models the ideal profile of the graduate of Jesuit education, was presented to Steven Mancillas. Finally, Jesuit’s highest award, The Bishop Lynch Award, honoring the most well-rounded student that best represents Jesuit Dallas in his work, character, leadership, athletics, service, and beyond, was awarded to Jacob Palisch.
The event concluded with a prayer by Mr. Earsing, but the day was far from over for the graduation seniors. They ran out of the Terry Center to fulfill the motto of “Men for Others” one more time at Jesuit’s annual tradition to host The Special Games.
The Special Games has been a Jesuit tradition since 1976. This year event brought together 650 participants from all over, including DISD, and provided the seniors one last opportunity to embody and live out the Jesuit motto as Jesuit students.
Mr. Perry hopes that his opportunity is taken by the seniors so that they “better understand the what it means to be Men for Others and how to exercise the Christian virtue of hospitality.” Mr. Perry went on to add that the mission of The Special Games “is the formation of young men as compassionate and loving leaders who see the face of Christ in everyone who they meet. The object of the day is a fun-filled event rooted friendship and accomplishment for our special guests.”
The seniors spend their four years at Jesuit learning what it means to be a Man for Others and learning to embody the Profile of the Graduate, and they end their experience at Jesuit with the perfect experience to put everything into fruition. Seniors learn and act as students for the last time before they move on into the world. The Special Games, as Mr. Perry said, is a reminder of what it means to be a Jesuit students, even beyond graduation, and that they are called to be Men for and with Others.
When asked about his day, Matt Musson commented that “It was an amazing ceremony and an incredible way to end my time at Jesuit.”
Similarly, Miles Okamoto commented that “It was a great feeling to see all of the things that my cclassmates and I have worked for this year, and over our four years, recognized, especially now that now, in my senior year, I know each of the guys who were honored as a brother, as opposed to freshman year where I didn’t recognize half of the people getting awards. Also, in keeping with the Jesuit way, there was no better way to follow convocation than hosting Special Games and helping a bunch of awesome kids have fun.”
And so, the Class of 2017 end their time at Jesuit but begin their time beyond.
Below is the full list of awards presented at the last convocation for the Class of 2017.
