He’s Back: Fred Donahue Subs During Community Days

-

The halls of Jesuit felt a familiar presence last week in light of Community Days. Despite many teachers leaving for the event, one came back to share his love of history with the students of Jesuit. Mr. Donahue returned to lend a helping hand last week, subbing for Mr. Wood’s World History classes and two of Ms. Segal’s AP classes.

“It was great to see Mr. Donahue back on the 28. I was amazed at how Donahue’s presence was felt throughout the room and from the moment he walked through the door, he commanded the entire room” said Evan Bausbacher ’17. His viewpoint was shared by many other students as well. John Jackson ’18 noticed that, “He’s very passionate about what he is saying.” That passion for history drives Mr. Donahue to do what he loves, “[The best part is] being able to throw some stuff out to the guys, get some feedback and get some discussion on stuff that they’ve not really thought about, seeing the wheels turn a little bit” he said.

Being back at Jesuit is good he says. “I don’t have any big responsibilities, I’m covering some classes, I’m getting to do some real teaching. I get to actually teach Classical Greek History.” He mentioned what some might say to be the best part, “In the end I also don’t have to grade any papers or take any work home.” By focusing solely on teaching, he creates an environment that students notice and appreciate. Will Fynes ’18 said, “It was a quality experience; he is a quality teacher.”

After he left last year, Mr. Donahue told Jesuit that he could sub should they need any help on busy days. Community Days gave Jesuit the perfect opportunity to bring him back. Said Mr. Donahue, “If I’m doing it another teacher doesn’t have to sit in; they’ve got time to work on their own stuff. I like coming back and teaching some history.” Students such as Bass Stewart ’17 welcomed the opportunity to learn from Mr. Donahue that they might have otherwise missed out on. “It was amazing to have him as a sub, It really felt like I missed out when before I got a chance to have him in a class. I always wanted to take his historical context of war class, but having him as a sub is the next best thing,” said Stewart.

Nevertheless, it may be Mr. Donahue who has cherished the experience the most, “It’s fun interacting with the guys,” he said.
