September 20th marked the first meet of the 2014-15 swim season, showing very promising results for the Rangers this year. Jesuit’s swim team had 17 swimmers place in the opening meet of the season. The team did exceptionally well, putting one swimmer in the top 3 of every race. The varsity swim team placed first overall, and the JV placed second. Sophomore Abbas Hussein described the meet as “a good start to the season.” Hussein has high expectations for the team in the future, saying, “We hope to place top 5 in our district.” This hopeful response was definitely based on the stellar results of the meet, and the success of the majority of the swimmers.

The KC invitational is usually a great warm up for the Rangers, illustrating their strengths as well as their weaknesses. While this meet was not against the top swim teams in the district, Coach Doug Moyes believes he can still use the competition as an opportunity to assess his swimmers. Coach explains that the meet “gave [him] an opportunity to see some of [his] new swimmers compete for the first time.” Coach Moyes has very high expectations for the team this year: “We should be top 2 in our district and top 5 in our region. Our goal is to again be in the top 10 at the 6-A Texas State Meet.” As successful as this meet was, Moyes still thinks that his swimmers have key areas to work on and believes they will continue to succeed if they focus on these areas that need improvement.

Another Jesuit swimmer who competed in the meet, Jack Matthews ’17, believed that “the team did really well for [the] first meet, especially the new freshman.” This meet gave the freshman a chance to prove themselves to not only the coach, but also their fellow teammates. Matthews hopes that “he can help lead the new swimmers and set a good example.”

The Rangers will continuously seek success in the pool for the rest of the season, hoping to continue their momentum with the next meet on Thursday, October 9th. The results of the meet are below:
