Cartoenuto Shines As Rangers Dominate St. Mark’s

-

Jesuit Swimming and Diving has been on a roll this season, and that continued during a dual meet against St. Mark’s School of Texas. The dual, held November 13th at the David A. Segal Family Aquatic Center, saw the Rangers steamroll the Lions 129-56. The Blue & Gold improved to 5-0 in dual meets on the year.

Early Momentum

Going into the meet, the Rangers had plenty of reasons to fear St. Mark’s. The Lions, the current reigning three-time Southwest Prepatory Conference Champions, were returning multiple stars from last year’s roster. For a moment, it looked like the Rangers’ fear was justified. St. Mark’s started the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. Armaan Newasker, Judah Issacs-Sodeye, Ethan Wang, and Richard Wang threw down a 1:36.72 to best Luke Lary ’26, Jonah Ruhl ’27, Drew Shippey ’27, and Riccardo Carotenuto. Cartoenuto split a 21.08 on the anchor leg to almost run down Wang. The Italian is an exchange student from Milan who is with Jesuit Dallas for the semester.

Despite the early win, it quickly became apparent that the Lions would not be able to keep up with the Rangers. In the 200 Freestyle, the event came down to Miller Martin and Sebastian Suwanda ’26. Suwanda would out touch Martin in a time of 1:47.48. Junior JP McCosker ’27 stepped up big time, taking third in a personal best 1:50.37. The 200 IM proved bigger for the Rangers as they took four out of five scoring positions. Shippey (2:05.11), Michael Tobin ’27 (2:12.58), George Weaver ’26 (2:19.48), and Ian Reichart (2:19.58) all finished in scoring position.

No Looking Back

Following the 200 IM, the meet shifted to the Rangers’ strength. Three Rangers swept the podium in the 50 Freestyle. Sam Kennington ’26 took the win with a time of 21.40. Carotenuto once again stepped-up big time, taking second in a 22.08. Luke Lary took third with a time of 22.20. While taking place before the meet, the diving team continued its dominance over its opponents with Koby Broad ’28 (178.45), Kobus Brewton ’28 (134.65), William Blosser ’26 (125.80), and Koen Mathys ’27 (109.80) collecting massive points for Jesuit. The Rangers continued rolling with the 100 butterfly. Lary and Drew Shippey finished first and second, respectively.

The 100 freestyle was no different. By the end, Jesuit occupied four of the five scoring positions. Jonah Ruhl took the win in a time of 46.23, dropping from his seed time. Kennington took third with a 48.73. Carotenuto dropped a whopping two-seconds from his seed time to take fourth, and Porter Pope stepped up big-time to take fifth in 51.03. In addition to massive drops, multiple Rangers moved up in position to snatch points away from St. Mark’s.

To wrap this dominant stretch, the Rangers finished the top four positions in the 500 freestyle. Sebastian Suwanda acquired his second win of the evening with a time of 5:02.37. Grant Wilton ’27 took second with a time of 5:04.87. JP McCosker (5:09.73) and Noah Ruhl ’28 (5:20.59) finished third and fourth, respectively. St. Mark’s was only able to get one scorer in, and he finished fifth.

Nail in the Coffin

The final few events of the meet ultimately sealed the Rangers win. The 200 freestyle proved to be competitive. The Rangers’ relay of Sam Kennington, Drew Shippey, Riccardo Carotenuto, and Sebastian Suwanda won the event in 1:29.48. Carotnuto’s 21.59 proved to be the fastest split of anyone in the event.

St. Mark’s attempted to claw it way back in the 100 back and 100 breaststroke, but the Rangers held firm. Jonah Ruhl won the 100 back in a time of 51.64, besting the Lion’s Armaan Newaskar, Ethan Wang, and Illan Gunawardena. Peter Hasik ’27 got into scoring position with a fifth-place finish. The 100 breast was St. Mark’s last gasp of air, as Oliver Gehab won the event, touching the wall in 1:02.07. Gehab bested the Ranger’s Grant Wilton to claim first. However, Porter Pope ’28 (1:04.47) and Michael Sanmiguel ’27 (1:10.10) ensured that St. Mark’s attained minimal points with third and fourth place finishes, respectively.

With the meet a forgone conclusion, the Rangers were now fighting for style points. The 400 free relay, consisting of Luke Lary ’26, Sam Kennington, Suwanda, and Ruhl easily won in a 3:14.34. The bested the St. Mark’s “A” Relay by a whopping thirteen seconds. The Rangers’ “B” Relay of JP McCosker, Michael Tobin ’27, Peter Hasik, and Porter Pope touched in third with a time of 3:32.52.
