The Jesuit Crew Pre-Season: What to Expect

-

Since June, the Jesuit Crew team has been putting in the work on the water and in the weight room. The extra motivation from capturing a win in the Lightweight 4+ at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta has helped the team raise the standard and find the skill to show our region who Jesuit Crew really is. Through this, the team has set new and higher expectations for themselves, and they plan to meet those expectations with determination and grit.

“I expect to win gold at every race and nothing less. The amount of talent and leaders on this team is incredible. With continued training and discipline, we won’t lose.” -Team Captain Jackson Gregg ’26

Reflecting on the Summer

The summer has brought many insights to the team. Whether power or technique, the rowers have brought it upon themselves to further improve and learn to build the strength and consistency of the team. Also, over the summer, the Rangers have scattered all across America to further train and improve their personal skills and mindsets to help finesse the team’s well-rounded squad. From South Bend, Indiana, to Marietta, Ohio, the rowers and the coxswains have been gathering remarks from high-level and collegiate coaches to further support the team.

Head of the Charles Regatta: Boston, Massachusetts

The prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta is the biggest fall regatta in the world. Consisting of a 4,702-meter racecourse, the regatta draws in teams from all around America, Great Britain, Canada and other countries. Jesuit is competing in the Men’s Youth 4+, including 86 other teams. This race, including rowing powerhouses like St. Joseph’s Prep, Row America Rye and St. Paul’s School, will provide a challenge that will motivate our rowers to do their best.

Head of the Hooch Regatta: Chattanooga, Tennessee

The Head of the Hooch Regatta, one of the last great regattas of the fall season, consists of a 4,500-meter racecourse in which more than 180 teams participate in. Similar to Head of the Charles Regatta, this race hosts more than just American teams, including several teams from Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and others. The regatta attracts over 20,000 spectators, offering a vibrant atmosphere for both participants and visitors. Although entered boats for Jesuit have not been announced, they will definitely be similar to the Head of the Oklahoma boats, providing a challenge for our rowers to show America what the Crew program here at Jesuit has come to be.

Expectations for Oklahoma and Beyond

Although I did not get a chance to interview coach Eli Brown, I did get a chance to interview some of the leaders on the team and gather their insights on what you should expect for the upcoming season. Here is what team captain Jackson Gregg ’26 and varsity coxswain Sunil Shah ’27 said about the expectations for the season:

“Going into Oklahoma I feel fantastic about our team. We’ve all grown so much over the past 4 months and we’re ready to dominate.” -Jackson Gregg ’26

Gregg emphasizes how much the team has grown since the spring and expressed confidence in their ability to perform at a high level. His words reflect the sense of momentum and optimism that has been building within the crew over the past few months. Yet, along with that excitement, the team’s leaders also recognize the need to stay disciplined and focused on what lies ahead. Varsity coxswain Sunil Shah ’27 expanded on this perspective, stressing the importance of maintaining high expectations and never settling for past success:

“We have expectations for this upcoming season, and we have come to deliver. Our aim is to build off of last season’s victory, and to not get comfortable with just one trophy. The team has a lot of energy and optimism coming into this first race, which will set us up for an exciting season.” -Sunil Shah ’27

As the team prepares for its first races of the season, the message from its leaders is clear: confidence, focus, and high expectations will define their approach. With both upperclassmen and underclassmen bringing energy to the squad, Jesuit Crew looks poised to build on past success while continuing to raise the standard. Given their determination, the upcoming season will be a defining chapter in the program’s continued tradition of excellence.
