Ms. Rachel Lytle Offers New Ways for Students to View Science

-

This year, the science department is lucky to have a new addition in the form of Ms. Rachel Lytle, who I am glad to have interviewed! Ms. Lytle teaches Honors and AP Biology, encompassing grades 9-12.

Background

Ms. Lytle went to a private Catholic school in Nashville, Tennessee. Her mother taught theology and algebra at the same school. Seeing her mother teach is what pushed her to become one herself. Her sister, who is a doctor, led Ms. Lytle to be involved in the science field, and ultimately biology.

Why Jesuit and Thoughts So Far

After moving from Nashville to Dallas, everyone Ms. Lytle knew and everywhere she looked told her there was always something positive and good about Jesuit. She knew many in our community would want to take AP Biology and she could help them be successful in the subject.

“I really like how you guys have a lot of independent time and you get to come by teacher’s offices to get help when you need it and meet with each other. I like that intentionality built into the schedule.”

Nashville vs. Texas

Ms. Lytle says that Nashville is full of greenery, trees and plains, and Texas is very flat, which I hope everybody here agrees with. Everyone told her that Texas would be a lot hotter, and she didn’t believe that. This year, though, was an exception, because it was a mild summer.

Favorite Teaching Philosophy

Ms. Lytle doesn’t consider science a concept- she considers it a practical course. She prefers attention to detail, and says she teaches science as a verb, such as observing, evaluating, and analyzing. Science, for her, is not just memorizing, it is also showing mastery and using these verbs.

Fun Facts!

What is your favorite food?

“Any kind of bread! Dinner rolls, cheesecake, or anything else.”

If you were an animal, what would you be?

“Uncommon answer, but a water bear, or tardigrade. This microscopic creature can survive in basically any condition, even outer space!”

What career would you pursue if not teaching?

“Not so distant from a teacher, but a librarian! Ms. Lytle likes to read, gain knowledge, and help others find things.”

What is one thing you would like to master that you are not good at yet?

“Ms. Lytle took Spanish in high school. She can understand it, but she would like to be better at speaking too.”

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

“Always getting eight hours of sleep! Ms. Lytle also said stalling time to go to sleep, which many people here would love!”

Takeaways

As a current student in her biology class, I can say that Ms. Lytle is a wonderful teacher and would be happy to answer your science questions. If you see her in the hallways, stop by and say hello to welcome this great teacher to our community!
