On June 20, 2025, Netflix released K-Pop Demon Hunters, an animated feature film directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. Neither Netflix or its distributor, Sony Pictures Animation, anticipated this much popularity from the film.
The Development Stage
In March of 2021, K-Pop Demon Hunters was announced by Sony Pictures Animation. It began development with an initial streaming release date of February of 2023. In the same month of its initial release, the film was officially sold to Netflix for viewers to stream. In June of 2024, it was officially announced that the film would hit Netflix in 2025, and it would eventually release on June 20.
Plot

The film revolves around Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who make up the group HUNTR/X. They are a very popular K-Pop group, but behind the scenes, they are demon hunters. The role of demon hunter has been passed down through generations, and the girls were selected to take on the responsibility. Gwi-Ma, the leader of the demons, tries to take them down by sending the Saja Boys, a demon boy band, to compete with HUNTR/X. The Saja Boys consist of Romance Saja, Baby Saja, Mystery Saja, Abby Saja, and their leader Jinu.

We learn more about Rumi’s backstory, finding out that her father was a demon. Her mother passed away when she was young, and her mother figure, Celine, makes her hide her demon patterns from Zoey, Mira, and the whole entire world. As for Jinu, he ditched his mother and sister to live in the palace, but he tells Rumi that he was forced to leave them. He can hear Gwi-Ma’s voice in his head telling him what to do. Jinu and Rumi start to form a bond, with Jinu trying to convince her that she should embrace her patterns even though she is told to hide them. Rumi is hesitant with Jinu at first, not knowing about his past, and she believes that he wants to be free from Gwi-Ma.
Towards the end of the film, Rumi finds out who Jinu really is. She still believes that he wants to be free, but he assures her that he will never change. After her falling out with Jinu, Zoey and Mira find out who she really is too, and HUNTR/X has a public breakup. The girls separate, and get hypnotized into going in to a Saja Boys concert. At the concert, they reunite to take down the Saja Boys and Gwi-Ma, and everyone accepts Rumi for who she is, patterns and all.
The Soundtrack
A big part of the film is its soundtrack. Due to the film revolving around K-Pop idols, the directors wanted the music to be perfect. The original songs made for the film were hits, with all of them charting on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Golden” ending up at #1 for several weeks in total. “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop” also cracked the top 10.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, K-Pop Demon Hunters has something for everyone. Good music, good plotlines, and it is a fun, family-friendly film.
