The Jesuit tennis team’s beginning season has started very successful and strong so far this year. With two matches in January and three in February, the tennis team has worked hard to prepare before districts at the end of March. The team has won all of the after school matches so far, and has placed in each tournament this season.
Match Against John Paul II High School (January 12)
Dillon Blanton ’25 said, “The tennis season thus far has been fairly successful. We’ve had a good team environment and good results to go with it.”
The tennis team battled their way to a victor against JPII with a 7-3 lead. Match winners in singles included Dillon Blanton with a tough battle at 6-7, 6-3, 10-6, Ben Woodard winning 6-2, 6-2, Brooks Spurgin winning 6-0, 6-2, and Carson Voegtle winning 6-0,6-0. Doubles winners included Patricio Carrillo and Noah Jones winning 6-3, 6-2, Alonso Carrillo and Henry Bryarly winning 6-3, 6-0, and Carson Voegtle and Brooks Spurgin winning 6-0, 6-1.
Grapevine Frozen Open (January 27)
The Grapevine Frozen Open is the tennis team’s first big event of the season where the team secured first and second place in singles, Alex Park winning first and Connor Cole taking second. These two players had a a terrific run at the tournament winning their early matches easily. Park won his first two matches without dropping a game at 4-0,4-0 and won his semifinal match 6-1, 7-6. Cole also won his first match 4-0,4-0, won his second match 6-1, 6-1, and won his semifinal 6-1, 6-2. The two Rangers battled through a long final match with Alex Park coming in victoriously winning the match 7-5, 6-3.
William Wayne ’26 said “So far I think this tennis season has gone well! As the season has gone on, our team as a whole has been doing better and better! It has been a really fun and exiting experience so far and can’t wait for what is to come!”
Also, the doubles team Dillon Blanton and Brooks Spurgin lost early in the Grapevine tournament, but came back to win a match 8-6 in the back draw.
Flower Mound Jaguar Tournament (February 16)
In the second tournament of the season, the Rangers were able to place again and come victoriously in doubles. Mathis Valenta and Connor Cole placed first in Boy’s Doubles at the tournament, having a very successful run, on their journey to victory. The duo won their first match 8-2, their second 6-2, 6-0, their third 6-0, 6-2, and won their final match 6-0, 6-4. The team played exceptional tennis and not only battled through all of their matches, but also persevered through the enduring cold and windy weather during the tournament.
In the singles draw, senior Alex Park won his first match 8-2, but lost in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Brooks Spurgin won his quarterfinal match 8-2, but lost in the semifinals 8-4. Freshman Luke Nettune and his Ursuline doubles partner Ellas Castro won their quarterfinal match 8-3, but lost in the semifinals 8-2. Freshman Carson Voegtle and his Ursuline doubles partner Margret Armstrong won their quarterfinal match 8-6, won tehir semifinal match 8-1, but lost in the finals 8-3.
Coach Wainwright said, “I think the season is going really well so far. We have a really strong [team], and I am looking forward to see our strength carry through the season for big tournaments. I think as always, we are able to see ways to improve and hopefully we are able to take advantage of those opportunities and step up our game a little more and finish strong.”
Conclusion
So far, the Jesuit tennis team has had a successful season so far, battling through some tough matches and dominating others. While some of the matches were canceled because of the February freeze, the team showed their energy and spirit on court and came in victorious multiple times. The teams match wins from TCA, Nolan Catholic, and JPII have proven to help them in the important matches at tournaments. Next on the tennis team’s schedule is a few more after-school matches, one more tournament and then districts at the end of March.
