Meals on Wheels Lures More Jesuit Student Volunteers

-

Preparing the carefully assorted meals, Jesuit students and faculty volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program sought to follow Jesus’ example and feed the hungry. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Jesuit became host to yet another community service success. Serving meals to those in need, Jesuit has once again displayed its benevolence and dedication to charity.

Run by sophomore counselor, Raul Ornelas, Assistant Community Service Director, Anthony Mattacchione, and Assistant Principal, Fred Donahue, the Meals On Wheels program was able to deliver over 3,500 meals to people who fight hunger every day. Over 60 students attended and gave up part of their Thanksgiving break for the good of others, showing these students’ true commitment to the motto “Men For Others.” Ornelas was particularly impressed by the turnout, mentioning that “more students help out every year” and that the program “continues to grow.”

However it wasn’t just these students who selflessly gave their time; many Jesuit parents also helped out. This donation of time and effort as opposed to just a monetary donation truly helped further this noble cause.

Michael Fonseca ’15 described his experience fondly saying that giving the meals out “felt great” and that he was “impressed with the amount of people who showed up to help.” This innate desire to help others without reward, other than the satisfaction of knowing that they helped another human being, is what makes Jesuit students unique.

Jesuit students do not strive for recognition, but rather they strive to “give and not count the cost,” as the prayer for generosity reminds us all. Performing a service to Dallas as a whole, Jesuit has once again displayed its commitment to others by supporting such a necessary cause.
