NFL Week Six Overreactions: Rico Dowdle’s Revenge Game

-

NFL Week Six further completely flipped the script on the NFL, with the two previously unbeaten teams losing their second in a row, the Bears beating the Commanders, the Chiefs beating the Lions. Everything I thought I knew about the NFL was put into question this week, and honestly, I’m all for it.

The Cowboys Defense Needs To GO

It seems blasphemous just how terrible the Cowboy’s defense has been all year long. I’ve given them enough second chances at this point, and after a game like that, it’s about time we give up on the unit altogether, and trade for someone to help on defense, along with firing Eberflus. They just could not get anything right against Carolina. The Panther’s offense dominated the Cowboy’s defense, totaling 410 yards and 30 points. The Cowboys may have lucked into an interception off of Bryce Young, but don’t let that get it twisted: they were absolutely, horrendously, incorrigibly bad this game. Rico Dowdle hung 183 rushing yards and 56 receiving yards on their heads, along with a receiving touchdown. The Cowboys just can’t win games consistently when their defense is consistently terrible. They need to make a change to help their offense, which has scored 27 points or more in four of their six games this year (62.5% winning percentage in those game). So, whether that means trading for Maxx Crosby or Denzel Ward, Jerry Jones needs to make a move.

Buccaneers are the New NFC Favorites

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been putting on a show in the NFC. They sit at 5-1, despite injuries to starting WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, as well as started running back Bucky Irving. Their offense is sixth in total points scored this year, and seventh in passing yards per game. They currently hold the number one seed in the NFC, and their competition isn’t looking so hot. The Packers have been struggling as of late, the Eagles are on a two-game losing streak, and the 49ers are loading up the Injured Reserve with so many players, and I can’t imagine them recovering from those injuries well enough to challenge the Bucs. Furthermore, Baker Mayfield is an MVP candidate as of late, because he has helped the Buccaneers win five one-score games. He is showing that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he is living up to his $100 million contract. The Buccaneers are primed to show the NFC what is up and look for them to be Super Bowl Contenders down the stretch.

Cam Skattebo was the Steal of the Draft

The New York Giants and Cam Skattebo put on a show Thursday night against the Eagles, with Jaxson Dart and Skattebo leading New York to a 34-17 upset win over the previously 4-1 Eagles. Cam Skattebo had 98 yards on the ground, as well as three rushing touchdowns. Furthermore, he led the Giants pacing on the ground. He had 19 carries and was able to dictate the tempo with which the game was played. Despite being a fourth round pick who most teams locked over when they were drafting, Skattebo has proved he is just as dominant as he was at Arizona State. The Giants should be extremely excited for when they have Malik Nabers, Jaxson Dart, and Cam Skattebo on the same offense. And to be able to get him at pick no. 105 this year is absolutely tremendous work by the Giants front office, and they should be encouraged by his performance so far. The Giant’s rookie class this year has exceeded expectations to say the very least, and I’m excited to see what else awaits them as of now.

Britain Hates us More Now than they Did in 1776

Now, you may ask yourself, “what could be worse than what we did to Britain in 1776?” Well, I’ll tell you. For starters, giving them the worst NFL football game of the week to host in their stadium is one thing worse than that. The NFL slated the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos to clash in London this year. And while it is probably not their fault, this game ended up being one of the most dreadful, sluggish, terrible games of the week. Although, most of the adjectives I just used can describe England too. However, I want to capture just how terrible this game was. For starters, the two teams combined for a total of 24 points. Also, the Jets never made it into the red zone. Furthermore, the Jets, in total, threw for -10 passing yards (45 passing yards and 55 yards lost by sacks). Neither team could get anything done on the ground either, both teams averaging 3.0 yards a carry. The Jets had more offensive drives than they had offensive points. The Broncos allowed a safety. Just overall bad football, and frankly, I’d like to apologize to Britain for what the NFL did to them this season.

2024 QB Class Champion is Still Up for Debate

Caleb Williams and the Bears faced off against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders in what was another matchup between the number one and number two overall draft picks in 2024. Jayden Daniels won the last one off of a walk-off Hail Mary to win 18-15. This time was a different story. Caleb Williams answered the call, propelling the Bears to an early 13-0 lead after a Jayden Daniels interception. He kept going, but Jayden Daniels was able to cool himself down and take the lead 24-16. Caleb Williams dropped a touchdown pass off to Deandre Swift that made the score 22-24 after a failed two-point conversion. Then, on a potential game-sealing drive, Jayden Daniels made a costly fumble that allowed Caleb Williams to set up a game-winning field goal from Jake Moody, propelling Chicago to victory. Now, obviously Jayden Daniels is more proven than Caleb Williams, but let’s not rule out Caleb Williams still being the better prospect. According to the me, it is way too early to tell, because one answered the call and took his team to victory, while the other had two costly turnovers that eventually sealed his demise.

Final Thoughts

Rico Dowdle was absolutely dominant, and luckily for me, I was able to pick him up off the waiver wire after his performance against the Dolphins. He was a huge help in securing my victory, but I wish he hadn’t done it against the Cowboys. I’d also like to point out a trend of running back resurgence this year. Even though Derrick Henry has had a down year, Cam Skattebo, Rico Dowdle, Javonte Williams, Jonathan Taylor, Bijan Robinson, and James Cook have all had excellent years as the new faces of the running back market.
