Eulogies for Charles J. Kirk

A Critic’s Eulogy for Charles James Kirk, by Copy Editor Andrew Finger

Today, the world is made poorer. Charles James Kirk has been shot to death in Orem, Utah. Mr. Kirk was a true man, a man dedicated to creating a better world for his two children, a man of courage and devotion, who risked life and limb to speak out about his vision for a new world. He envisioned a world reborn, a world where reason triumphed, a world where men could converse rather than fight, where through logic and thought truth and beauty were elevated and the world moving forward, rather than being trapped in the cycle of fickle emotion, unthinking subservience, and perpetual suffering. Yes, Kirk had his own beliefs- he was an avid supporter of the populist conservatives. But his ultimate struggle was not merely to promote his stances on the issues of the day: Kirk was a man truly dedicated to the cause of promoting reason over emotion on all sides of the political isle, devoting his life to conversation, attempting to promote the spread of reason to America’s youth. On September 10, 2025, he gave all that he could give for reason- for the cause that Man might live in a world where ideas are freely discussed, a world of progress, a world of hope, he died by the assassin’s bullet.

Mr. Kirk dedicated his life to a noble pursuit not unlike that of our founding fathers: for the principles of America, for family, humanity, freedom, he dedicated his days to the pursuit of logical discussion and debate, to inspire among the youth a newfound excitement in those principles of freedom of thought, freedom of speech, and freedom of conscience that our proud ancestors fought and died for.

Charles Kirk sought, above merely convincing people of his own beliefs, to bring about a more fundamental change in political thought. He was a man of the conviction that reason, not emotion or blind subservience, creates a better future for Man, a fine successor to our Founding Fathers. I personally often disagreed with what he said, with the views he espoused, even with the style in which he spoke and conducted debates. I found his views on third-world immigration misguided, his justifications often shaky, many of his economic views questionable. But to many, he was their first step into a world of reason, a world where beliefs had to be justified and defended from a real dissenter, someone diametrically opposed to their ideas.

Mr. Kirk was a man of principle. Mr. Kirk was a man of singular dedication and service to the human race. Mr. Kirk was a man of moral character, an upstanding father and husband. Mr. Kirk was a man of whom our ancestors would be proud, a man living up to the highest traditions of reason and Liberal civility. Mr. Kirk was a man of his nation, a man who more than self his country loved, a man blessed with Patriot dream. Mr. Kirk was a martyr for American civilization, a martyr for progress, reason and the American dream. His dream of reason inspired many across all political lines to re-examine their own positions, and often to come to conclusions that he disagreed with. His dream of reason inspired a political awakening in the hearts of young Americans from coast to coast.

But what becomes of a dream deferred?

A Friend I Never Met, by Editor-in-Chief Zachary Ingham

Charlie Kirk’s mission was to engage young people in respectful debate. For that reason and the fact that he was a good man with a wife and two kids, it felt horrible hearing about the initial report of his wounding, and then waiting two hours for the dreaded news of the worst. It felt uniquely terrible praying for a man whose life I knew deep down was impossible to save.

It also feels terrible because the Jewish community lost a friend today. Charlie stood by his Jewish friends regardless of the pushback. For that, I’ll remember him almost like I knew him personally. Most of the Jewish community will.

We must make this the last time this happens, America. Charlie Kirk, like all people, was irreplaceable. An America unified against political violence is what Charlie would have wanted. God is with you, Charlie.

May He Rest in Peace, by Viewpoint Editor Evans Senvalds

“For as much as it has pleased Almighty God of His great mercy to take unto himself the soul of our dear brother, we therefore commit his body to the ground- earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change the body of our low estate that it may be like unto his glorious body, according to the mighty working, whereby he is able to subdue all things to himself.” (Book of Common Prayer)

This hope is the only comfort in these times.

Charlie Kirk lived his life in service to three things, God, Family, Country. A Christian, a Father, a Patriot; he was all of these, and lived his life straightforwardly in service of these. He was a man of honor who simply wished to debate ideas, and discuss the national issues in a calm and reasoned way.
May God relieve the sorrow of his wife and two daughters, who tragically lost their father. May God protect this country as well.

May Charlie Kirk’s soul enter that heavenly country, and in the fullness of time enter the New Jerusalem with his beautiful family, and the great community of believers he touched in his brief lifetime.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)

We can only wait to see you again at the end, Mr. Kirk.
