Jesuit Honors Underclassmen at Convocation 2025

-

Each year, Jesuit Dallas holds prayer services to acknowledge the academic and spiritual dedication of its students. On May 20, 2025, Jesuit Dallas recognized freshmen and Sophomores who have excelled in academics, clubs, and activities through the Profile of the Jesuit.

Opening and Prayer

Mr. Earsing, the president of the Jesuit Dallas, commenced the convocation and said he “welcomes parents and family members to this ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of the Classes of 2027 and 2028… [signifying] that we are all in this together for the greater glory of God.” Father Sylvester Tan, S.J., Superior of the Aloysius Gonzaga Jesuit Community, followed with an opening prayer to “help us all to rejoice in the gifts of our fellows, never forgetting that each of us is also your gift and that what is greatest is often invisible to our eyes,… [asking] these things through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” Ms. Williams, the Assistant Principal of Faculty Formation, concluded with a Scripture reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, stating that “to each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good”. Mr. Waits, the Assistant Principal of Student Academics, and Mr. Garrison ’92, the Principal of Jesuit Dallas, then presented the Academic awards.

Awards

Haggerty Math and Science Scholarship

Each year, Haggerty Math and Science Scholarships in the amount of
$2,835 are awarded to selected rising sophomores and juniors. Funding for
the tuition scholarships has been provided by the Jesuit College
Preparatory School of Dallas Foundation.

To be considered for the Haggerty Math and Science Scholarship, a
student must have either a 95 average in current on-level math and science courses
or an 85 average in current honors math and science courses. Each
candidate is then reviewed by the faculty of both academic departments
and the administration of Jesuit to determine his achievements in
mathematics and science. Also considered are his activities, leadership
roles, and community service involvement.

sophomore based on his strong character, exemplary academic
performance, and demonstrated passion for the sciences. This award carries a $22,000 scholarship to be applied to sophomore year tuition. The
competitive merit-based scholarship is renewable each year as long as the
individual remains in good character and continues to excel academically.

“Convocation sometimes gives me new perspective on my students. ‘I didn’t know he was so gifted at math!’ ‘He’s involved in Rangers for Life? I had no idea!’  It’s fun to celebrate their accomplishments and realize there’s more for me to learn about who they are.” – Mr. Berry ’07

“The convocations are one of my favorite events of the spring semester since they provide the opportunity to visibly recognize students for their high level of achievement in the classroom, their dedication to service, their strong leadership in extracurricular activities, and their demonstration of growth in the six tenets of the school’s profile.

I love seeing a student smile as he walks to the stage to receive his award. That said, I think I enjoy even more when this student’s peers get so excited for him when his name gets called. The fist bumps, high fives, and back slaps are visible signs of the brotherhood that exists between Jesuit students.” – Mr. Waits ’01

Conclusion

Mr. Aquino, the Dean of Student Affairs, concludes the convocation saying, “Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be. Give our Lord the benefit of believing that His hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.”

Congratulations to the Classes of 2027 and 2028!
