Every year, Jesuit Dallas welcomes new faculty into its community. During the missioning prayer service on September 19, over a dozen new faculty members were honored and blessed. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Ms. Lillie Frazier, one of our newest faculty in The Math Department. Her positive attitude made this a delightful interview for me.
Background and Family
“I grew up here in Dallas and went to Bishop Lynch High School. My dad is Catholic, and my mom is Methodist. My parents let me make my own decision when it came to my faith, and I decided in middle school I would become a confirmed Catholic.”
What is your Education/Career?
“For undergrad I studied Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Louisiana Monroe. While in Monroe I did an internship with The University of Alabama in Huntsville alongside the local NOAA and NASA offices studying how complex terrain (hills, valleys, and plateaus) might influence severe thunderstorms. I then went on to get my Masters in Education at Southern Methodists University.”
Why did you choose teaching?
“I chose to become a teacher because I wanted to help guide and support others. My high school and college professors helped shape and guide me into the person I am today, and I am forever grateful for their support.”
Why Jesuit?
“After going to Bishop Lynch, I knew I wanted to teach in a school that would allow me to support my student’s growth in every aspect of life. As my students grow in their faith and their education, I grow a little with them as well.”
How do you think math relates to openness to growth, this year’s theme?
“Math is a subject where some people tend to give up easily because they consider themselves as “not a math person” and one of my goals this year is to help my students see that everyone can succeed in a math class. However, they need to be open to struggling at times and be confident enough to ask for help and guidance.”
Any plans for the upcoming year?
“I am trying to complete an interactive notebook for Algebra 1 that will hopefully help freshman class improve their note taking and studying skills.”
