My Biggest Gripe as Media Editor

-

Intro

Picture this: You are finding your groove while editing your video. You are struggling to piece together your film or video, but now you know everything is starting together. Everything is beginning to come together, and you are making enormous progress on your project. Then you go to another tab to look something up, and it takes a minute. You return to DaVinci Resolve, and hover your mouse over your clip. Then it turns to a horrifying red color with the words “MEDIA OFFLINE.” Now you are forced to shut down Resolve and open back up, ruining all your flow and momentum you once had.

My Gripe

I am a die hard DaVinci Resolve supporter. If you put a gun to my head and told me to use Premiere Pro, I would, with complete confidence, tell you to “get that garbage out of my face.” It is no secret in the film industry that DaVinci Resolve is slowly taking over the film industry. Many of your favorite films, like Dune and Everything Everywhere all at Once, were edited on DaVinci Resolve. With various editing features and the best color grading, it is no wonder that Resolve is very popular with film studios. But what makes it truly a game changer is that you can get most of these on the free version. This makes it, without a doubt, the best free editing software out there. As much as I try to induct you into the DaVinci cult, such things drive me crazy when using this software, and the worst is the constant Media Offline I get.

DaVinci Resolve clip going media offline

Now I mostly use a Canon when shooting, and I have my Canon footage downloaded onto my Photo app on my Mac. Now when I move that to a folder, it is a movie. According to Resolve, a file is a workable file for their software. At first, the footage will not have any issues when running. Still, if I go to another tab or leave it for a while, all the footage will turn into Media Offline, which I can not fix in Resolve. So I exited and reopened Resolve, which takes around 30 seconds. But it is a pain doing this, and I have messed up the flow I will be in and just ruined the momentum of my project. I have yet to fix it, and this problem is not happening when I use my Sony camera footage, which is also a Mov file.

Conclusion

Now to conclude this article, I will say this: DaVinci Resolve is still better than the muck called Premiere Pro. I hate the constant Media Offline. If anyone has any answer to fix this problem, please tell me. :)
