New Teacher Interview – Mr. Pabian

-

During the Mass of the Holy Spirit, Jesuit Dallas welcomed 17 new faculty members. One of them is Mr. Pabian. Mr. Pabian is one of the three new math teachers at Jesuit.

How did your path through high school and college lead you to Jesuit?

“So I actually was in the Marine Corps right after high school. So teaching wasn’t my primary thought at the time. I was in the Marine Corps for about five years, and one of my passions in there was to lead junior Marines and teach them how to do the job and stuff. I knew I wanted to teach, and I’ve always been a strong math person. So, I’m like, ‘Let’s try math and let’s try to do the teaching on top of that.’ And I got into it and loved it ever since. And what actually got me here was my wife is a pharmacist and she got a job at the Dallas VA hospital. And so that’s basically what brought me down here.”

What is your teaching experience?

“I taught two years at a public school in Flagstaff, Arizona. I taught six years at a private school in Brookfield, Wisconsin, which is right next to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. So I guess in total, about eight years of actual teaching.”

How do you approach students in class?

” Very scarily, I try to scare them, as much as possible. (I try to be) accessible to them at any time. Yeah, I don’t wanna be overbearing. I don’t want to force stuff on you. I wanna learn this stuff together, that this is a together activity, not a me versus you activity. That’s how I try to approach in the classroom and when you meet with me one on one.”

How do you like Jesuit so far?

“I really like it so far. My favorite thing right now (is) the students I’m really surprised at how well you guys behave in class. I was kind of worried because I taught at a smaller school and it had boys and girls and I was kind of like ‘it’s all boys in the class,’ I thought it was gonna be like rowdy at all the times. And you guys are very well behaved with sir. And saying thank you and actually looking people in the eye and shaking hands and very, very proper. I really like how you guys are acting.”

What are you involved in outside of the classroom?

“With Jesuit, I’m looking at getting into the robotics team, trying to help out with that. Besides that, in my personal life, I like reading, I really like running right now. I really got into running. I run outside (on) trail(s). Over this weekend, I ran 10 miles by accident. I got lost. Going downtown, I got lost and all of a sudden I turned a five mile run into a 10 mile run.”

Remember, if you see Mr. Pabian, be sure to say hello and give him a warm welcome!
