Jesuit Tennis Kicks Off its Season with a Tough Loss to JJ Pearce

Standing on the baseline with a tennis ball in hand, Jonathan Ardoin ’21 prepares to unleash a mighty shot to his opponent on a bright and sunny day. Jonathan swings and rips a forehand crosscourt, just out of the reach of his opponent.88This past week, on September 17th, 2020 the tennis team began its fall campaign with a well-fought loss against JJ Pearce. This year, the team looks different than in previous years. In this first match, six new players for the team were selected to play against a tough JJ Pearce team.

The match is split into two groups. One group is the Varsity team and the other team is the Junior Varsity team. This week, about six players that had never played a match at Jesuit before they were called up to the task of being a part of the Junior Varsity team. The match results are as follows.

Results (Varsity)

In the doubles round for the varsity group, JJ Pearce managed to win two of the three matches, with the only doubles win coming from the duo of Carl Wilson ’21 and Jonathan Ardoin ’21 with a score of 7-6, 6-3. In singles, the varsity team dominated, winning five out of the six matches. Some notable winners include Calum Taylor ’21 (8-4) and Blake Woodard ’22 (8-5). In result, the varsity match ended with a victory for the Rangers by a total match score of 6-3.

Results (Junior Varsity)

Junior Varsity struggled during their first match of the year falling to the Mustangs 9-0 in overall match play. Robbie Berven ’22 and Blake Woodard ’22 just fell short with a 0-6, 6-4, 3-10 defeat in a third-set tiebreaker. Even though the JV team struggled during their first match, they showed a lot of spirit and determination. In addition, the team gained good experience for matches still to come.
