Huge Success: Catholic Charities Dallas Collections Drive

-

“It was a team effort–and that is the important things,” Coach Koch, Jesuit athletic director and organizer of Jesuit’s role in collecting 10,441lbs.

A five-ton elephant lingered outside of Walsh gym last week. Well not really, but Jesuit did manage to raise 5 tons of food in just one week!

January 28th-February 1st, Jesuit teamed up area Catholic high schools  to collect canned goods for Catholic Charities.

Catholic Charities Dallas devotes itself to help the poor. The Most Reverend Bishop of Dallas Edward Burns urged several Catholic high schools around Dallas–Jesuit, Ursuline, Bishop Dunne, John Paul II, and Bishop Lynch–each to pledge 5,000 lb; the Diocesan goal was to raise 25,000 lbs.

Working alongside Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Dallas, the North Texas Food Bank promised to match the Diocesan contribution, raising the total goal from 25,000 lbs to 50,000 lbs.

The Jesuit community did an outstanding job raising 10,441 lbs in just one week. This was all possible due to the contributions made by many students, teachers, faculty, clubs, and sports teams.

The top contributors included the Athletics department raising 7,500 lbs, the Social Studies department raising 1,000 lbs and PALS raising 500 lbs.

So what happens now? Now that Jesuit has collected over 10,000 lbs, the North Texas Food Bank will match our contributions, then box all of the cans. From there, Catholic Charities Dallas will pick up the boxes and distribute them to needy families in the Dallas area.
