As you walk in, you see the entrance overflowing with beach decorations. Palm trees and beach balls populate the foyer, converting the Terry Center to a fun seaside landscape. You go up the steps and see two rows of poker and blackjack tables filled with awkward freshmen. Then you walk into the assembly hall, complete with vivid music and groups people dancing and talking. Welcome to the Freshman Mixer. On September 8th, 2018, the freshmen of Jesuit, Ursuline, and Hockaday gathered for their Freshman Mixer. The mixer had many different forms of entertainment. The students could play poker and blackjack at the tables (not for real money). There also was a raffle held in which students could win a Homecoming package, complete with a restaurant gift card, a free mum, and two Homecoming tickets. The most important part of the mixer was the dance itself, with a variety of music genres.
Now, was the mixer fun, boring, or bad? Let’s find out.
The Good
The mixer had a variety of activities for the students to do, and many enjoyed it. As Jacob Nieman ‘22 said, “I had fun playing– and mostly losing– Blackjack. It is also great to meet people outside the school and to make new friends.”
Hayden Montpas ‘22 said, “The mixer felt like everyone was welcome to enjoy.” He added that it was also “easy to talk to everyone.” The mixer really was the best place to interact with others, letting everyone have an enjoyable time.
A mixer wouldn’t be the same without music. Kyle Nolan ‘22 said, “The mixer was pretty fun and I liked the songs the Dj played.”
The Bad
During the mixer, there were many activities to participate in, but nonetheless, there were some issues. Jacob Neiman added, “sometimes I felt like there wasn’t enough to do there, and I found myself a little bored near the end.”
One Ursuline student suggested “more opportunities to actually meet new people. I think poker was a good way to do that but most people never went to play so it wasn’t very effective.”
Others just weren’t totally satisfied. Cole Younger ’22 stated, “I did like the mixer, it’s just that it needed more food and the room needed to be a bit darker.”
My Thoughts:
The mixer was great, with many fun things to do. We were able to meet people, dance, play cards, and be teens. The only real problems were that there weren’t enough tables for games, and not enough people came out to dance.
Overall, the freshman mixer was a blast, giving us students an opportunity to sit back and enjoy each other’s company. The mixer also gave us an opportunity to get to know more people.
